My 10 Commandments for Traveling

(Excerpt from my backpack travel journal)

I have listed my own 10 commandments for traveling to fully enjoy every trip. These rules help me maximize the experience when visiting places.

1. Research

With the internet, it is easier to get information on a lot of stuff. Take the time to check on the interesting places to visit to your destination. It would also be good to know the culture - the community's do's and dont's. Ask friends. Bottomline, get as much information your destination.

2. Plan

Based on your research, plan your trip. Although it is alright that you and your buddies can go for a "ride the tide" thing, it
is best that you have a basic itinerary before leaving. This would help you to know what you need to bring, things to watch out for, etc. It would also save you time.

3. Find a good travel buddy

Going on trips is more fun when you have a companion to go along with you. It would also serve as a security on your part in case something unexpected happens. If traveling alone, choose one buddy that you will update often about your location.

4. Know the Emergency Numbers

Just in case something unexpected happens, it would be a great relief that you know who to call. Get the emergency numbers of the locality and store it in your mobile or your handy bag. Inform your buddies about it, as well.

5. Pack light

Make sure that you bring enough clothes but not too much. Check your plan and plan your attire based on your activities. Bring 2 extra clothing for unexpected twists. Check out clothes that you can wear a couple of times during your stay. Toiletries should be confined to minis and sachets.

6. Have an emergency kit

Prepare an emergency pack that will have medicines and first aid kits. If need be, have instruction cards on special medications that you might be taking or need to take in case of emergencies.

7. Make cash handy

Although most destinations have credit card and bank facilities, it would be good to have cash at hand. The key is research.

8. Be flexible

Although you have a plan, have the luxury of flexibility. Adjust the plan based on where "your tide" brings you. The plan is just a guide. When you have discovered something that is not in the plan, just enjoy it. Do not let the plan ruin the fun!

9. Learn and Immerse

You are in a new place so take the time to learn about the community. Immerse yourself in their way of life and learn from the locals. Traveling should enrich you and broaden your knowledge.

10. Have fun

The most important rule is simply just have fun! Enjoy the new sights. Find something new to try out. Be adventurous. Let go and enjoy the destination.

To go places is exciting so just let go and let your inner child out to enjoy and learn.
