Its story span from the famous gold mask of its pre-Spanish settlement to becoming Panay’s capital to the present laidback Iloilo municipality. It may have taken a step back from its former status but it continues to share its stories that remained to be the foundation of Iloilo City. Welcome to banwa sang Oton.

Exploring the town where Iloilo started.
The town of Oton is the second oldest Spanish town in the Philippines. Founded in 1572, it became the capital of the Alcadias de Panay that included the islands of Panay, Negros, Guimaras, Tablas, Romblon, and Sibuyan. It played a vital role in the Galleon Trade as a stopover point for galleons traveling from Cebu to Manila. Its location made the town an easy target for moro pirates. This prompted the transfer of the capital to La Punta, the present-day Iloilo Proper, in the 1600s as a measure to enhance the security of the town from pirate attacks.
The transfer of the capital slowed down the development in Oton as trade and advancements focused on La Punta and its surrounding areas. Today the town is more residential in nature supporting the business districts of the city. There are remnants around town that give you a quick glimpse of the town’s glorious past. Most of its glory are now confined in old pictures that are on display in museums and in certain locations around town.
 
Oton Death Mask
 
The Oton Death Mask is an ancient burial artifact that historically and scientifically proves the existence of a pre-Spanish settlement in the area of Oton. The excavation, led by the National Museum of the Philippines, recovered an eyepiece and nosepiece made of thin gold that covered the eyes and nose of the dead to ward off evil spirits. Together with this discovery are artifacts from other countries in Southeast Asia po and China. The discovery is significant because it outlines that community social status, trade relations, and social beliefs existed in the Philippines even before the arrival of the Spaniards.

The Oton Gold Death Mask is one of the historical artifacts that point to pre-Spanish settlement in Oton.
Only individuals with high social standing in the community were buried with a death mask. The practice is said to ward off evil spirits from entering the orifices of the deceased. The artifacts recovered with the masks were products from other trading ports which meant that pre-Spanish community in Oton was engaged in robust trading. Most museums in Iloilo City features the replicas of the Oton Death Mask to showcase the interesting beginnings of Oton and Iloilo City.
 
Church of the Immaculate Conception (Oton Church) and the Old Church Ruins
 
The town of Oton once had the distinction of having largest church in the region. The Spanish-period church, completed in 1882, was built in Gothic-Neoclassical design with a floor plan in the shape of a Greek Cross. Its twin towers stand mightily with the church’s dome watching over the town. An image of the Immaculate Conception was mounted atop its dome. Unfortunately, the church was brought down to ruins when the 7.8 Lady Caycay Earthquake struck in 1948. It was not restored and a more lowkey modern church structure was built as a replacement.

The present structure was blessed on December 1972. Compared to the former structure, the new church was only a fraction of the size of the megalithic church. The Marian image installed atop the church is said to be from the original structure. The interior is calming with its blue and white hues. The stained-glass window images depicting male saints line its upper walls. Its altar, with the Marian image as its centerpiece, was a beauty to admire. The interior was a designed as a homage to the Jaro Cathedral.

A small grotto on the church courtyard is the only remaining structure from the old church. The massive stone foundations have been enveloped by roots of a huge tree. Judging from the size of the foundation, you can tell that the church was huge and was probably a prime pilgrimage destination during its time. Sadly, it was not restored and, with that direction, it also resulted to the dwindling number of visitors and pilgrims visiting Oton.
 
Oton Municipal Hall and Municipal Plaza
 
Similar to old Spanish-period towns, Oton was designed where you will find the center of governance, commerce, and religion at the heart of the town. The Oton Municipal Hall was built in the 1950s and followed a neo-classical architecture. The hall houses the offices that offer basic services to Oton residents. It is now undergoing renovations while keeping its original facade intact.

The sprawling Oton Municipal Park stands just right in front of the townhall. The sprawling plaza serves as an ode to the locals and to the history of Oton. The park features a playground and a small bandstand. A pond was installed in the park where there are installations that give honor local heroes, both known and unknown. There are also artifacts on display that outline part of the town’s history.

The Oton Saga Mural is the main art installation of the park.
At the center of the park is a sprawling amphitheater where most socio-civic activities of the town is held. The Oton Saga Mural stands oatop the theater. The artwork depicts the history of Oton as a pre-Spanish settlement to its colonial years to its modern day Filipino bayanhihan. The artwork was a brainchild of Timoteo Jumayao. With a touch of history and beauty, the Oton Municipal Plaza is a world-renowned plaza when it was recognized as one of the best in the world in 1987.
 
Oton Catholic Cemetery
 
The Oton Catholic Cemetery is believed to be one of the oldest cemeteries on the island of Panay. Located along the national highway, it once caught my attention with its red brick walls and camposanto. The camposanto stood out and has since piqued my interest. The square-shaped cemetery is one of the two remaining Spanish-period structures in town.

The octagonal-shaped chapel is located at the center of the cemetery. Its facade is highlighted by bas reliefs of skulls, crossbones, and burial jars. An inscription in hiligaynon that says "Sa Dios magdayao ang mga tol-an sang mga nagpaubus sining cabuhi" (Translation: To God they will glorify, the bones of those who were humbled in this life). An image of the Crucified Christ is the centerpiece of the altar. The cemetery and the camposanto has undergone some changes including the cementing of some parts of the camposanto’s wall. I hope that the LGU takes the initiative to rehabilitate the canposanto close to its original state.

POST TRAVEL NOTES​
It is quite hard to imagine that Oton was once a bustling and central settlement in Panay Island. You walk around the town and you wouldn’t get a glimpse of its glorious past UNLESS you know what you are looking for and where to find it. It is quite sad that the town slowly drifted into the shadows when it could have kept its story alive. I could just imagine what Oton could have been if locals decided to restore rather than replace.

We are exploring where Iloilo relocated after Oton.
We, as Filipinos, have a long road ahead in taking better steps in putting value in our history. Oftentimes, we lose valuable cultural property because we struggle between historical value against that of financial value. The sad part of it is that, when we lose these historical pieces, we lose the opportunity to connect with the past and everything becomes just a story.

Getting there: Major airlines have direct flights to Iloilo from major local and international airports. You can take a van from the airport to SM City Iloilo. From SM City Iloilo, you can take an aircon jeep to Mohon where you can take a jeep or bus to Oton. Just ask the driver to drop you off at the Oton Church. Travel time from Mohon to Oton is around 30 minutes.

It hugged the news last year after water from its main river wreaked havoc downstream that toppled down communities and claimed lives. This is also where the first lechoneros of Cebu were believed to have originated. This was not the first time that I took notice of this city and after visiting the city thrice for its attractions and its lechon, I can say that I have actually experienced Talisay’s high!

Talisay City was a treat for the mind and tummy.
Talisay City is the most populous component city in the Visayas. It was founded as an Augustinian estate in 1648 and was later declared a municipality in 1849. Its role in Philippine history came in during World War 2 when it became the center of the guerrilla movement. It played a pivotal role in the liberation of Cebu when liberation forces landed along its shores in March 26, 1945. It was in 2000 that it was declared a component city and has since then experienced rapid economic growth. But behind these developments, Talisay has stories and hidden wonders to explore and enjoy.
 
Manipis Viewing Deck / Isay - The Sleeping Dinosaur
 
The mountain road connecting the cities of Talisay and Toledo is a favorite rid that you just been outvoted by the board e route of both bicycle and motorcycle riders. The road snakes po through the central mountains of the island giving you a rugged and relaxing ride through its rustic landscape. A quick stop at Manipis View Deck is a must for those traversing this road. Manipis View Deck is a viewing spot along Cebu’s central mountain ranges.

Locals call the view "Isay". They claim that the mountain ranges was shaped like a sleeping dinosaur.
The spot offers a view of “Isay The Sleeping Dinosaur”. The mountain ranges, when viewed from a certain angle, is said to form a dinosaur sleeping in its belly with its head tucked on the its side. They have a cartoon rendition to help you visualize it. I really tried to get my creativity around but I was not able to visualize it. Nevertheless, the views of the mountains and Mananga River was a real beauty to enjoy.
 
Igutan Cave and Falls
 
A small barangay downstream holds another Talisay natural wonder - the Igutan Cave and Waterfalls. Tucked along the rocky cliffs of Barangay Jaclupan, you can reach the site by crossing the Mananga River to its entrance. It would be a short walk from there as you scramble over boulders and rocks to get to its base pool.

The rock face of the cliff and its stacked boulders create a hollow cave area where water cascades into a shallow pool. The water then runs downstream joining the Mananga River. This spot may not be as grand as the more famous waterfall attractions in Cebu BUT it does have its own rustic charm. The serene vibe of the falls will make you enjoy communing with nature as you feel the cold water run over your feet.

There are remnants of facilities in the area like stairs that lead to an area at the top of the cliff. There are rest area structures that will give you an idea that it was once a popular spot in the area. There is a small cave opening at the second level where you can find a waterfalls inside. Unfortunately, the gate at the entrance was locked.
 
Mananga River and Dam
 
The Mananga River is a prominent water resource that snakes through the mountains of Talisay to its coast. I caught a glimpse of the river at the Manipis View Deck as its snaked along the base of Cebu’s mountain ranges. Mananga River made its presence felt as we drove down the mountain roads of Talisay with views of its calm river flow.

The scenic views of the river is relaxing. A dam was built along the river to help control the flow its water. The gentle flow over the dam was a beauty to see BUT do not be deceived by its serene flow. It can easily turn its fury into a ravaging flow. And topped with a very poor flood control project of this government, the river can easily damage properties and claim lives.
 
Archdiocesan Shrine Sta. Teresa de Avila
(Simbahan ng Talisay)
 
At the heart of the town poblacion, you will find the Sta. Teresa de Avila Church or the Simbahan ng Talisay. The parish was established as independent congregation in 1836 and the stone church structure was completed in 1848. Its proximity to the coast of Talisay brought heavy damage to its structure during the liberation of Cebu during World War 2.

The Talisay Church was a mute witness to the centuries of Talisay history.
The church was built under the Graeco-Roman architecture. Its two belfries are connected by a portico that is supported by two columns at the entrance. It was built using coral stones. The Talisay Church was heavily damaged during World War 2 and only the facade and its stone walls remain from its original structure. Side wings were added when it was remodeled but its arched side windows were kept intact.

The inside of the church was simple with a gold-colored altar as its highlight. An image of the Crucified Christ is the altar’s main centerpiece. Two side altars sits adjacent to the main altar. The arched windows were now side entrances leading to its side wings where more pews are located. It was declared an archdiocesian shrine in 2007.
 
Talisay Japanese Pillbox
 
Talisay City is one of the few locations in the country where you can still catch a glimpse of the Japanese Pillbox. These wartime structures were made from concrete and served as a line defense by the Japanese during World War 2. It is usually built low on strategic terrains like coastlines, rivers, and airfields. These structures were built to survive heavy artillery fighting.

The Japanese Pillbox in Talisay City is located in Kalubihan, one of the coastal communities of the poblacion. It is just a short walk from the church along V.H. Graces Street and then continue walking through a dirt road beside the Ruthy’s Lechon stall until you reach the basketball court. The pillbox sits adjacent to the court. It looks like a slab of cement but, upon closer inspection, you would be able to see the round-shaped pillbox. It was built imbedded into the ground with concrete. A small opening serves as its entrance and exit point. Unfortunately, this WW2 relic was used as a dumping ground of garbage. I hope that they would be able to restore it and give it the proper recognition for its historical value.
 
The 1945 Talisay Landing Site and Liberation Park
 
The events of World War 2 in Cebu grounded Talisay in Philippine history. It was the center of the guerrilla intelligence operations during the Japanese Occupation and played a pivotal role in the liberation of Cebu. The coast of Talisay City was the site of the amphibious landing of liberation troops that led to the surrender of the Japanese in August of 1945.

This beach spot was where liberation forces set foot after it was bombarded to clear the coast of landmines. The bombardment was a result of intelligence reports that Japanese forces planted landmines along the beach. The landing in Talisay was part of the military campaign to liberate Cebu, Bohol, and Negros from the hands of the Japanese. A monument and historical marker were installed on the site to commemorate the historical significance of the event in the province and in the country.

Adjacent to the site is the Liberation Park. This spot is an open-space park that is part of the tourism project of the city to make history more appealing to the masses. It was designed to feature sports venues, playgrounds, retail areas, and a boardwalk that will showcase the beauty and stories of the city. It has also been a venue of community activities of the city.
 
Talisay Lechon
 
Cebu will always be a lechon heaven for me. Although I first fell in love with the lechon of Carcar, I have read accounts that it was from this city where the first lechoneros of Cebu originated. I’ve also been told that Talisay’s lechon is more flavorful even without the “sarsa”. And the best way to confirm this was to have a taste test in Talisay.

For the record, yes… Talisay Lechon is yummy, tasty, and flavorful without any sarsa. It may look dry but it is juicy and the flavors just burst in your mouth. It goes best with puso and dugo-dugo (pig’s blood stew). I love the lechon from Carcar and Talisay but my personal preference would be that of latter. I enjoyed how Talisay lechon satisfied my palate for its unadulterated taste.
The most popular spot to get to enjoy a lechon meal is to head up to the Talisay Litson Food Park, just across the Liberation Park. You can enjoy your lechon meal as you enjoy the beach view and breeze of the poblacion’s beach spot. If you are visiting on a Sunday, do not fret because the streets of the poblacion are lined up with lechon stalls and you can easily enjoy a satisfying Talisay lechon meal.

POST TRAVEL NOTES
Some destinations become popular for their attractions while others for their stories. Talisay City falls under the latter. While the popular Cebu destinations showcases the beauty of nature, Talisay City puts forward its history and culture. This city proves that stories over a meal is enough to get people interested to explore Talisay.

Most travelers harp on the beauty of what their eyes can see. They tend to compare destinations based on the usual definition of what is beautiful, i.e. white sand vs black sand beach spots. But each destination has its own story and culture that makes it stand out from the usual. It can be in a form of a quick bite that shares a slice of the town or city’s history. All it takes is just a heart to explore and a brief stop to enjoy.

Getting there: There are regular flights to Mactan-Cebu International Airport from major local and international airports. You can then take a bus to SM City Cebu and then take a jeep to IT Park where you can take the Mango bus to the poblacion of Talisay City. Alternatively, you can take the aircon jeeps to Minglanilia or Naga. You can ask the driver to drop you off to Tabunok. Habal-habal and Tricycle is the mode of transportation around Talisay City.

You really cannot help it since the UNESCO Heritage Church is a tourism icon of the town and the province. The usual Iloilo itinerary is not complete without swinging by the town to visit this Spanish-period structure. But here’s the thing… there’s more to see in this town, if you don’t rush, that would make you go… let’s Miagao!

Miagao is not just about faith. It has stories that run from its mountains to its seas.
Located just 2 hours away from the city, it is believed that the name “Miag-ao” was derived from the flowering plant “Miagos” that once grew abundantly in the area. This town was initially a suburb of Oton (until 1580), Tigbauan (1580-1652), San Joaquin (1652-1703), and Guimbal (1703-1716). It was in 1731 that it gained its status as an independent town. Today, Miagao is a very popular tourism and pilgrimage town in the province of Iloilo and, beyond its majestic church, are natural attractions and stories that are often overlooked.
 
Sto. Tomas de Villanueva Parish Church
(Simbahan ng Miagao)
 
At the heart of the town, the Sto. Tomas de Villanueva Parish Church, or the Miagao Church, is the most popular tourist and pilgrimage attraction in Miagao. It was in 1731 that the parish was established by Augustinian friars and the first church was built in Ubos. A second church was built inland in 1787 after two Moro invasions. The present church is the third structure built after it was damaged during the 1898 Philippine Revolution.

The church is one of the four Spanish-period Baroque Churches in the Philippines that was declared as UNESCO World Heritage Site. The church was built under baroque-romanesque architecture with thick walls and buttresses. Its massive walls served as a fortress against moro attacks. The church was built in lime, adobe, coral, and egg giving its unique orange hue. Its orange glow is best seen during sunrise.

The facade of the church depicts the tropical everyday life in Miagao with touches of biblical references. The two unequal watchtower belfries stand guard on each side of the facade. The church is popular for its intricate bas-relief that has a mix of Spanish, Chinese, and Muslim influences. The coconut tree is a depiction to the Tree of Life. St. Christopher who holds the coconut tree, with the Child Jesus, on his back is adorned in native clothing. The facade also has niches with carved images of St. Thomas of Villanueva (located on the niche above the door), St. Henry of Bavaria, and Pope Pius VI.

The single nave church interior is beautiful with its simplicity. It directs your attention towards its gold-plated altar, with the image of the Crucified Christ as its centerpiece. The massive walls give its visitors the feeling of comfort and security within its walls. The baptistry is located under on of its belfries. Parts of its walls were part of the original structure. Interestingly, locals marvel at some of the images imprinted on its walls through time. These images were believed to be a blessing for their faith.
 
Miagao Municipal Hall and Plaza
 
Standing beside the church, the Miagao Municipal Plaza serves as the center of the town’s community activities. It is complete with a sports facility, a multi-purpose hall, and a sprawling open park. The open park was a good spot to just enjoy a lazy day watching the town go by during early morning or late afternoons.

Across the plaza stands the new Miagao Municipal Hall. It serves as the center of governance of the municipality where local government offices are located. A fountain stands at the entrance with a bas relief showcasing the products and livelihoods that the town is known for. Two Spanish-period cannons, a historic artifact from its colorful past, are also on display adjacent to the fountain.
 
Tigmalaguit Peak
 
After registering at the tourism office at Miagao, we met with our guides - Kuya Jobert, Kuya Rodel, and Kuya Dionisio of OMPZ Adventures for our quick and easy morning hike to explore the mountains of Miagao. The organizer is one of the groups recognized by the LGU to provide tours and hikes on the mountains of Miagao. In no time, we were already zooming along the Barangay roads of the town heading towards our first destination - Tigmalaguit Peak.

Tucked along the hinterlands of Miagao, Tigmalaguit Peak is one of the easy hiking destinations in Iloilo. We just parked the habal-habal on the side of the concrete road in Toog and took a 20-minute hike to the peak. We
were treated to amazing views of the mountains guarding Miag-ao and it also gave us a sneak peek to the reason why we went here - to view the mountain terraces of Miagao. The hike was relatively easy with a steep ascent on the last stretch to the peak.

These terraces were carved with minimal equipments.
Tigmalaguit Peak offers a panoramic view of the mountains and the plains of Miagao. More importantly, it was one of spots that offer an amazing view of the terraces carved along the sides of its mountains of Iloilo. These terraces were carved, using minimal equipments, with mud  walls that allow water to settle in from its irrigation system. It was a real beauty hidden along the mountainsides of Miagao.
 
Little Batanes (Buklod)
 
A short ride away from Tigmalaguit Peak is a spot that locals refer to as Little Batanes. I am often intrigued when I encounter local spots that is named after a popular Philippine destination because, more often than not, the beauty of the place can stand on its own. There is no need for the comparison.

I guess this was their point of comparison with Batanes.
After a quick snack break at the base of the peak, I headed up to the trail of Little Batanes. A small welcome arch stands at the jump-off point of the spot. I was able to reach its view deck in less than 5 minutes. The deck offered a panoramic view of its rolling hills, one of the terraces of Miagao, and the winding concrete roads of the area. It was a calm and relaxing view to enjoy. I guess you are wondering where Batanes comes into play. Well, it took a while for me to figure it out and the perimeter fence in the area gave it a similar vibe to that of Vayang Rolling Hills. From a personal standpoint, I think Buklod can stand in its own beauty and there is no need for the comparison.
 
Dilaan Falls
 
Dilaan Falls is one of the most accessible waterfalls attraction in Miagao. The hike to the waterfalls is about an hour from the jump-off point. The trail will keep you amused with the its lush greens and mountain views. It is relatively an easy hike through and through with rest stops along the way. One of the rest stops has an amazing view of a limestone rock formation jutting out from its green landscape. Expect to get your feet wet along the way.

Dilaan Falls is a two-tier waterfall hidden along the mountains of this town. It got its name for its tongue-shaped rock ledge along the cascades of the waterfalls. Its water cascades down into a base water pool and runs downstream along its rocky riverbed. You can also take a refreshing cold dip in its base pool to cool you down after the hour hike to catch its beauty.

This attraction is a refreshing break from the usual Miagao itinerary. The cold water, the fresh air, and the amazing views of its forest covers grounds you with nature. It was an amazing way to recharge with nature. It was both relaxing and refreshing to explore the hidden natural wonders of Miagao.
 
Miagao Bat Trees
 
Back in the Miagao Town Plaza, you would notice a swarm of dark figures fluttering around the branches of a barren tree. You would think that these are birds but they are actually fruit bats. The Bat Trees of Miagao is another natural phenomenon in the town where fruit bats has found a home in some of the trees near the plaza. Where these bats came from and how they thrived in Miagao remains to be a mystery. Interestingly, locals and bats have co-existed for more than 7 decades.

These bats have been in the area for more than 70 years.
It was not hard to miss these trees because the sound and the sight of these nocturnal creatures will catch your attention. Local folklore share that these trees are home to underworld creatures. It made me so curious that I tried to get near their dwelling trees. The noise and the smell of guano was overwhelming that I only stayed at a distance to admire these nocturnal creatures.
 
Baybay Norte Kuta
 
Miagao is a coastal town and, just like other old Spanish towns, it has its own collection of Spanish-period watchtowers. These baluartes were built as part of a defense system against Moro pirates. I have read that there is a watchtower ruins on the outskirts of the town but little did I know that there is also a baluarte within the poblacion. From the town plaza, I walked along Octaviano Street where you will find the Baybay Norte Kuta at the end of this street.

Built in 1760, the Spanish-period Kota was built as a watchtower and a fortress that guard the town from Muslim raiders. It was the baluarte that protected the poblacion. It was in 1994 that the Baybay Norte Kuta was renovated and re-purposed as the multi-purpose hall of Baybay Norte. The stone foundations remain standing to these day with the barangay hall built on top of the fortress. Although parts of the original fortress can still be seen, it would have been better if its repurposed closer to its original design.
 
Miagao Campo Santo Ruins
 
The Miagao Public Cemetery is another repository of Spanish history. Just like old Spanish towns, the cemetery was also designed to have a campo santo or a funerary chapel. It is in this chapel where masses for the dead are held and during All Saint’s Day. This town has its own mortuary chapel that was made of limestone and red bricks. It was octagonal in shape and had a dome - a distinct feature of the capillary.

Unfortunately, the once beautiful campo santo is now in ruins. Only a portion of its red walls and its altar remain standing. Plant covers have invaded the walls of the old cemetery church which probably contributed to its crumbling into ruins. You can still see its prominent red walls and its coral stones intact in some areas. I hope that the LGU of Miagao can take the initiative to restore the structure to its former glory to keep its story and legacy alive.
 
Tay-tay Boni
 
Standing adjacent to the main highway, this Spanish-period bridge is often overlooked by tourists who visit Miagao. The Puente de Boni  was built in 1854 and was named after its foreman Boni Neular from Miagao. It was made from yellow coral stones mined from the mountains of Igbaras and Miagao. This small narrow bridge measuring 36 meter long was meant to be used by horse drawn carriages that travel between Miagao to Iloilo City.

Today, the bridge is on display along the outskirts of the town. A park was built around it where you can appreciate the coral stones and its elegant design. The massive posts with topped by pyramids are eye-catching and will make you appreciate the bridge’s Spanish-period design. Its massive stone works gives you that impression that it was designed to last, and it did.

POST TRAVEL NOTES
Majority of tourists or travellers often visit a destination for its most popular attractions. They visit the place and enjoy the spots that people have shared or marvelled about. Miagao falls under this category. The town’s tourism is defined by its church. Regular tourists visit the church and only church. But behind the shadows of the church, the town has more to offer whether you are a nature lover or a history buff. I think it is about time that we explore more of Miagao that will make you go… wow!

The thing with iconic destinations is that most visitors fall into the trap of defining a destination by that single attraction. Everything else go unnoticed. But if we take the time off to take things slow and explore more, you get small surprises along the way. You end the trip with a better insight and understanding of the place and better stories to share that go beyond the usual.

​Getting there: Iloilo City is the main gateway of  Miagao, Iloilo. Major airlines have regular flights to Iloilo International Airport from major international and domestic airports in the country. 
 
You can take a van from the airport to SM City Iloilo and then take an air-conditioned mini bus to Ceres Bus Terminal in Mohon. From here, you can take bus headed for Antique. Ask the driver to drop you off at Miagao.

Located on the northeast side of Panay, this group of islands is a popular beach destination in the province of Iloilo. Hopping around its islands for a day will give the thrill of enjoying the beauty of white sand beach spots while extending a hand to the community-led tourism project of Islas de Gigantes.

The islands were first called Sabuluag, named after the tree that grows endemic to the place. It was during the Spanish-period that the name was changed to Gigantes. This was the time when stories of coffins found inside the Bakwitan Cave containing gigantic human skeletal remains.  It was this discovery that led locals to believe that the islands were also home to “engkantos”.
At present, Islas de Gigantes continue to enchant its visitors with its beautiful beaches. There are day trips offered and you may contact Rhett Paul Gigantes Island Tours and Services on their FB page for details of their services. I was impressed that local travel operators actively involved the community in its tourism efforts. It is great way to go island-hopping that comes with a purpose.
 
Cabugao Gamay
 
Cabugao Gamay is the tourism icon of Islas de Gigantes. This is where you will find the most popular overlooking view of the white sand strip and a small hill at the end of the island. Due to its popularity, expect tourists to flock and to take their time at the vantage point for that socmed-worthy shot. The good thing about its tourism management is that travel operators are sequenced as they arrive on the island so there is no need to get ahead because everyone will get their turn to get their photos.

Cabugao Island is one of three major islands of the chain. It is only half a kilometer in length marked by two rock formations on both ends. A white sand beach strip connects both rock formations creating a coast like a sandbar connecting two islets. The rock formations on one end of the island serves as a vantage point where you can see a picturesque view the island with the turquoise waters of the Visayas Sea in the background.

The white sand strip boasts of coastlines on both sides. The calmer side is where boats dock and where it is safer to take a dip. You can find your own spot under one of the coconut trees of the island where you can enjoy the sea breeze and seascape while enjoying a light snack. But here is a fair warning… the waters will be tempting that you can’t help but enjoy a quick dip under the hot gaze of the sun.
 
Bantigue Sandbar
 
Just a short boat ride away from Cabugao Gamay is Bantigue Island that is known for its sandbar. The sandbar emerges during low tide so timing your visit is crucial to enjoy its sandbar that stretches towards the other islands of Islas de Gigantes. A small resort on the island rents out cottages to visitors who wish to stay longer on the island.

Unfortunately, we dropped in on Bantigue Sandbar during the high tide and the sandbar was under the sea. Only the portion close to the island was visible and we only got a peek of its cream-colored sandbar. With nothing much to see, we opted to just take a quick dip at the sandbar and enjoy its waters.
 
Antonia’s Beach
 
Located on one of the bigger islands of Islas de Gigantes, Antonia Beach is a perfect beach spot to chill down. It probably got its name from a resort with the same name. Boasting with white sand coasts on two sides of its beach strip, this island stop lets you enjoy the beach while indulging in fresh seafood.

This beach spot is bordered by a hill on one end and a rock formation on the other. A white sand beach strip connects both ends. The strip has two beach fronts that you can choose from. There are huts along the strip where you can take shade or you can just choose to enjoy the beach vibe under the shade of coconut trees in the area. There are stores in the area that sell fresh seafood for a quick snack. You must try their scallops that come in a VERY affordable price.

The rock formation on the other side adds a dramatic flair to the seascape of this beach spot. The flat rock formations stacked together stands in contrast with the soft aquamarine hues of the waters of the beach. It was a perfect spot for a nice beach shot where the beach’s rugged vibe fuses with its calm waters.
 
Little Boracay
 
Little Boracay is a small cove along the rocky coastal cliffs of Islas de Gigantes Sur. Our guides shared with us that it got its name because the cove has the powdery white sand that is the same texture as that of Boracay’s. We came in during the high tode so only a small part of the cove and rock formations were accessible to tourists.

I was intrigued by the comparison that I quickly jumped into its waters and scooped the sand under its waters and… whoa! It was exactly the same powdery sand texture. It did not have the long stretch but the sand feature was the same. This spot was a good spot to enjoy a quick dip. The rock formations along the cove also serve as platforms to jump into a deeper part of its waters.
 
Lantangan Beach
 
After a full morning of exploring the beach spots of Islas de Gigantes, we had our lunch stop at Lantangan Beach. The coast was a beauty with its cream-colored sand and the view of the hills on one side of the cove. It is a community-center in the area and you could see that from the rows of boats anchored on its bay and the rows of houses that line the shore. This is where we were going to have our lunch.

It was this community that served as a lunch feast.
We were treated with hefty servings of fried fish, tinolang manok, seafood, and scallops. It was definitely a treat that we enjoyed. Imagine having a full lunch while enjoying the views of the island. One thing that really stood out for me was how the community was involved in tourism. They were the meal providers for our Gigantes Island tour. This is a great example of making programs by community for the community. It was great to see a community getting involved and getting something for it.
 
Tangke Saltwater Lagoon
 
Tucked within the limestone cliffs of Islas de Gigantes Sur, the Tangke Saltwater Lagoon is a natural saltwater pool that is one of the highlights when you explore this chain of islands. Our boat docked on a makeshift port and we traversed a rock trail that led to the view deck of the lagoon. The deck offered a panoramic view of its shallow aquamarine waters surrounded by towering limestone rock formations.

The lagoon has its own stories shared by locals. One of the stories claim that the waters of the lagoon rise during the feast of St. John the Baptist. Local folklore claim that the lagoon is home to “engkantos” that serve as guardians of the place. Locals warn guests to avoid being too rowdy or noisy so as not to disturb these entities and get cursed. Whether grounded on faith or folklore, these stories add flavor to the natural beauty of the lagoon.

We did end up taking a quick dip in the waters of the lagoon. The view of being surrounded by limestone rocks while swimming in the calm lagoon waters was enchanting. The place was calm and serene. Every now and then, a laughter or a yelp echo inside the lagoon. We dound ourselves on the other side of the lagoon. A small rock protruding from the waters gave us a different point of view of the lagoon. The lagoon was a nice break from all the beach spots that we have been exploring.
 
Pulo Pandan
 
The small island of Pulo Pandan wrapped up our island-hopping adventure in Islas de Gigantes. Its white sand shorelines just out from the sea. Also referred to as Turnina Island, it is so small that it only measures 25 sqm during high tide and circumnavigating the whole island takes less than 5 minutes. Just like most of the beach spots, the island is a mix of white sand coast on one end and rock formations on the other end.

This small island gave us the final touches of our Islas de Gigantes tan.
Our group had the whole island all to ourselves when we docked. The white sand coast greeted us as we waded towards its shores. I quickly headed off to the rock formation on one end of the island where I got treated to a 360-degree view of its coast and its surrounding waters. We also took a quick dip in its shallow waters at the coast of its rock formation. We breathed in the sea breeze as we enjoyed getting a tan under the afternoon sun.

Islas de Gigantes rolls in with gigantic adventures that is filled with beauty and heart. The islands let you experience a variety of tropical flavors and makes you enjoy every bit of island living. It also allows you to engage with its community that gives them the opportunity to earn from a sustainable program. With the two fused together, that makes my Islas de Gigantes adventure a fun and memorable islands experience.

Tourism is a major industry in the Philippines. We have 7,100 islands to be proud of and that can feed millions of Filipinos. Creating a sustainable tourism program, building the RIGHT tourism infrastructures, and providing opportunities to its communities strengthens the industry. It takes political will power to be able to deliver these opportunities to its stakeholders. And that will power is rooted on the Filipino value of “malasakit”. A leader that has “malasakit” is what we need in this country.

The story shared the origin of the town’s two natural attractions. It was once a hot spot for local travelers with its famous island canopies hugging travelers’ timelines. The town charms its guests with its stories and natural beauty. A visit to this town will make you say… maganda kasi ang Anini-y.

We are getting a touch of sand and sea in Anini-y!
According to legends, Anini-y is roughly translated as “people of a place of small rivers”. It is believed that the Malayan suffix “-y” signifies that the town was of great importance. It was during the Spanish period that the town’s population grew that led to its development between 1849 to 1854. Anini-y now stands as one of the towns in Antique that has kept its history, beauty, and rustic vibe.
 
St. John Nepomucene Church (Anini-y Church)
 
The St. John Nepomuceno Church, or more popularly called Anini-y Church, is the most prominent Spanish-period structure in town. Located at the town center, the first church was built from 1630-1638 close to the location of the present sanctuary. It was between 1845 to 1879 that the present structure was built by Father Vaquerin, using coral stones and eggs.

The Anini-y Church is the only well-preserved church of its kind in the province of Antique.
The church was built following baroque architecture with a rectangular facade with triangular pediment top. The pediment has a niche at the center bearing the image of St John Nepomucene. Its three-story belfry stands adjacent to the church. One of its original bells is on display in front of the church. The church was said to be designed similar to Miag-ao Church in Iloilo.

The interior of the church was a beauty for its simplicity. Although parts of the church were reconstructed, the church floors remain to be intact from the original structure. It is simple and yet its wooden altar stands out with the image of the Crucified Christ as its centerpiece. The wide windows allow natural light to stream through its navel giving it that illusion that it has a wide navel. Its baptistry is tucked on the first level of its belfry.

The Church of Anini-y goes beyond the manifestation of faith by its locals. It shares a part of Philippine history where locals took a stand against Spanish rule that resulted to the occupation of the church by the Philippine Independent church from 1902 to 1906. It has survived calamities, both man-made and natural. Interestingly, it is the only well-preserved church of its kind in the province of Antique. Its historical value is immortalized with a historical marker from the National Historical Institute.
 
Anini-y Municipal Hall and Plaza
 
Just a few meters from the Anini-y Church is the government complex that serves as the center of the municipality. The Anini-y Municipal Hall is a two-story structure that houses the offices that serve the needs of its constituents. There are two antique cannons on display at the municipal courtyard which serves as memories of the town’s colorful past.

Adjacent to the municipal hall is the sprawling municipal plaza of Anini-y. The plaza is complete with sports facilities and open park as it is the center of municipalities socio-civic activities. There are two installations in the park - the Rizal Monument and the Juan Castillo Obaga Monument. The Obaga Monument honors the contribution of the Anini-y born assemblyman to lobby for the separation of the town from Dao. It was declared an autonomous unit in 1949 with Juan Castillo Obaga as its first town mayor.
 
Anini-y Catholic Cemetery
 
The walls of the Anini-y Catholic Cemetery are also a memoriam from the past. The walls were built from 1890 to 1894, at the same time that the present church structure was built. This coastal cemetery is one of the preserved Spanish-period structures in Anini-y.

The cemetery perimeter walls were built thick from cut coral stone blocks. The perimeter walls are marked with pillars with a conical top. A small gate entrance is highlighted by an arch with a small cross atop its arch. The words “Mabanhaw Kami” are grilled along the arch that translates to the promise “We will rise again.”
 
Siraan Hot Spring 
(Entrance Fee: Php60 / Environmental Fee: Php50)
 
One of the popular natural attractions in Anini-y is the Siraan Hot Spring. Local legends tell the story of a lad, Nogas, who professed his love with the one of the daughters of Datu Oyong of Tinigbasan Peak, Anini. The datu sensing the seriousness of the proposal demanded that Nogas be able to draw warm spring water from a solid rock of Siraan. Nogas, not knowing what to do, sat down in one of the driftwoods in the area in tired desperation when a giant appeared behind him. Sharing his predicament with the gentle giant, the giant uttered something and then from a crack on the huge rock sprang out warm water and Siraan Hot Spring was born.

This natural attraction is located on the coastal outskirts of Anini-y. With a minimal entrance fee and environmental fee, you can already access the resort for a day. The science behind the hot spring is that hot gas escaping from under the rocks heat up the spring waters that flow out of the crevices of the rock surfaces in the area. I have also read that the small mound where a grotto now stands is a small extinct volcano. The hot spring waters are gathered in pools where one can take a relaxing and therapeutic dip to soothe your muscles after a long day of exploring.

The resort offers a panoramic view of the rugged coast of Anini-y, Sulu Sea, and Nogas Island. It is great spot to enjoy a quick and rugged beach escape as you enjoy its rocky coasts against the backdrop of the sea. I guess it is a great spot to simply enjoy the sea view while enjoying the warm waters of its spring.
 
Nogas Island

From the Siraan Hot Spring, I boarded a boat for a quick 20-minute boat ride to Nogas Island. This island, off the coast of Anini-y, is a naval reserve island. Its white sand coast and lighthouse is its main tourism draw, making it Anini-y’s tourism icon. I remember a time when Nogas Island was a prime destination among local travelers.

Just like Siraan Hot Spring, let us continue with the love story of Nogas and Anini. After the hot spring water sprung from the rocks of Siraan, Datu Oyong did not stop at the sight of the hot spring. The datu wanted Nogas to build an island along the waters facing Tinigbasan. Not knowing what to do and armed with his love for Anini, Nogas paddled through the waters with a baroto until he got exhausted. Then a silhouette of a mermaid emerged against the view of the setting sun. The mermaid asked Nogas why he was drifting at sea and he once again shared his predicament. The sea creature was moved by his sincerity that she promised to build an island overnight and, in return, the mermaid would be invited to the wedding of Nogas and Anini. Datu Oyong woke up to the view of a new island in the middle of the sea.
The whole community celebrated the wedding of Nogas and Anini on the new island. There were a lot guests that joined the merrymaking after the wedding of the lovers. As the wedding was coming into a close, the earth shook and huge waves swept the coast of the island. As guests were scrambling for safety, Nogas and Anini was pulled towards the sea and chained inside a cave underwater. The mermaid showed up angry at Nogas for breaking his promise of inviting the mermaid to their wedding. Nogas tried to appease the mermaid but the mermaid, in her anger, made a decision to keep the couple as captives. The couple were to do forced labor in building a stone bridge to connect the island to the mainland. That is why you get to see piles of white stones at the end of the Nogas Island towards mainland Anini-y.

The island is perfect beach destination to disconnect.
The island is a popular white sand beach spot in Anini-y. The coast offers a panoramic view of the cerulean waters of Sulu Sea and the rugged coastal landscape of Anini-y while enjoying its white sand coast. There are beach huts that you can rent for a day or you can find your spot under its tree or shrub covers to shield you from the sun. But let me just tell you that the waters and the view are so inviting that you can’t help but take a quick dip in its waters.

But the island’s main attraction is its calachuchi-lined pathway leading to its lighthouse. The trees were planted neatly along the path giving it that creative leading lines that is perfect for photos. The pathway continues around the lighthouse to the other side of the island where its mangrove covers thrive. You will also be amazed by its balete tree that was bent to form a natural canopy along the trail.
 
 
POST TRAVEL NOTES
Local folklore has shared, through generations, the love story of Nogas and Anini. The couple’s narrative has been immortalized by earlier generations by naming the town and the island under their names. Or was it the other way around? Nevertheless, the town of Anini-y is an example of how local stories passed from generation to generation to showcase the rich culture and beliefs of the place. It also shows that love remains to be the greatest story shared that surpasses time.

Like theater, there are no small towns in the Philippines. Each town or city has their own story to share to the world that gives you a glimpse of its colorful culture and its locals’ creativity. It gives you a different point of view while exploring the place. You appreciate the beauty of the place matched by its generational stories.

​Getting there: There are regular flights from Manila and major PH airports to Iloilo International Airport. You can take a van from the airport to SM City Iloilo where you take an aircon mini-bus to Mohon. Ask the driver to drop you off at the Ceres Bus Terminal in Mohon.
 
You then take a bus bound for Dao and ask the driver to drop you off at Anini-y Town Plaza. Travel time from Iloilo to Anini-y is around 3 hours. You can get around town using a tricycle.

It is the largest district in Iloilo City, both in size and population. It fuses the energy of the past with the dynamics of the present. It fuses it in a very charming way. This is the district of Jaro in Iloilo City, the center of the Candelaria devotion in the Philippines.

The iconic belfry of Jaro is a real beauty.
The district of Jaro was initially called Saro or Salog, a town known to be one of the “richer” areas in the province. Its history pre-dates the arrival of Spaniards that indicates strong trading connections with China and Siam. It was founded as a visita of Oton in 1575 and later on became a city in 1891. It was in 1941 that Jaro was incorporated to Iloilo City as a district due to the shift towards Iloilo Port as a focal point of the city’s economy.
Jaro is an old town charmer. The district is a repository of heritage and historic structures that gives you snapshots of the district through different time periods. These “time-stamped” structures are fused with the modern Jaro giving it that unique old-town Philippine charm.
 
National Shrine of the Our Lady of Candles
(Jaro Metro Cathedral)
 
The church stands unique as it is one of the few churches in the region where the belfry stands separate from the church. The church was first established as a visita in 1575 under Oton. It was later transferred to the jurisdiction of Arevalo in 1584. It became an independent parish in 1587, honoring the Our Lady of Nativity. It was in 1636 that the patron saint was changed to the Nuestra Senora de Candelaria after the poblacion was transferred to its present location.

The Jaro Cathedral is the center of the Candelaria devotion in the Philippines.
The present structure started construction in 1869, consecrated in 1874, and was built under the Romanesque Revival architecture. The church facade bears the image of the town’s patron saint -  Nuestra Senora de Candelaria. The unique design allows visitors to climb up the balcony where the revered image was mounted. From the platform, you get a beautiful view of the Jaro Belfry across the street. The image of the Nuestra Senora de Candelaria was first Marian image that was canonically crowned by Pope and Saint John Paul II. The event also marked the declaration that the Nuestra Senora de Candelaria would be the patron saint of Western Visayas, Negros Occidental, and Romblon.

The interior of the church was simple and elegant. The main altar glowed in gold with the image of the town’s patron saint as its highlight. Interestingly, the pillars of the church are lined with images of male saints, a contrast with that of Molo Church. The devotion to the Our Lady of Candles has made Jaro the center of Candelaria devotion in the country.

Apart from the Marian devotion, the church also shares a bit of history. Philippine hero, Graciano Lopez Jaena, was baptized in the church in 1856. A National Historical Marker was installed in the church in 1976 to recognize the historical value of the church. It was elevated to a cathedral and to a national shrine, the first in Western Visayas, in 2012.
 
Jaro Belfry
 
Standing majestically across the church is the Jaro Belfry. It is icon in Jaro because it dominates the skyline and is the most recognizable structure in the district. It stands unique because it is one of the few stand alone belfries that were built during the Spanish-period. It is the oldest belfry in  the Visayas.

Built in bricks and limestone rocks, the Jaro Belfry was built in 1744. The 95-feet structure served as a belfry and also as a watchtower against moro pirates. The belfry was damaged by earthquakes, the latest was the Lady Caycay Earthquake in 1948, that left only the first floor standing. It was declared a National Historical Landmark in 1984 and was fully restored in 2022.
 
Graciano Lopez Jaena Park
(Plaza Jaro)
 
At the heart of the district is the Graciano Lopez Jaena Park, more popularly known as Plaza Jaro. The 2-hectare park is a town square that was designed by Father Aguado in 1927. It is considered one of the most beautiful plazas in Panay with its arch, park benches, and a bandstand at the center of the park. The plaza offers an amazing view of the Jaro Church, the belfry, and the surrounding mansions in the area.

The park was named after Jaro-born Graciano Lopez Jaena.
Restoration efforts began after the Jaro Plaza was included in the list of Iloilo’s Cultural Heritage Tourism Zones. The plaza’s added attractions include dancing fountains and monuments honoring Ilonggo heroes - Graciano Lopez Jaena and Patrocino Gambao. They also installed a memorial for World War 2 local veterans. It was later renamed to Graciano Lopez Jaena Park to honor the Jaro-born hero.
 
Old Jaro Municipal Hall
 
Declared as an Important Cultural Property in 2017 by the National Museum of the Philippines, the Old Jaro Municipal Hall is part of Iloilo’s Cultural Heritage Tourism Zones. The two-story art-deco structure, designed by Juan Arellano, was completed in 1934. It used to be the center of governance of Jaro when it was still a separate city from Iloilo. It was later used as a police headquarters of the district.

The structure was restored by the National Museum and was used as a regional office. The interior of the building has offices and huge halls which was quite a surprise since the building looked small and compact from the outside. It is largely intact but is not in use at the moment. I asked permission to have a look around and was given permission. It was nostalgic. It was like I was walking into a set of a period film when I was exploring around the building.
 
Agaton 1927 Museum
 
Tucked on one of the corners near the plaza is a heritage house turned museum-cafe, the Agaton 1927 Museum. The house was built in 1927 by the owners - Dona Agatona Arguelles de Jalandoni and her husband, Don Ruperto Jalandoni. The house is a repository of the family’s heirlooms and their strong Catholic faith. In fact, the house is one of the few private residences that the Vatican allows masses to be celebrated.

The house is a typical bahay-na-bato structure. The first level has been turned into business spaces while the second level was turned into a museum-cafe. The museum gives you a glimpse of the history of the house, the family’s life, and how the family practiced their Catholic faith. The house comes alive with its collections of photos and memorabilia of the family’s decades of living in the house. You get to feel the fire of their faith with their altars, collection of religious images, and the various recognition that they received from the Archdiocese and the Vatican. The house is a fusion of history and faith.

The tour ends with a cold calamansi drink and uraro at their cafe. You can also try the dishes from their heirloom recipes to complete the experience. These recipes were probably served during the events, lunches, and/or dinners that the Jalandonis once served to the guests who once graced the house. I tried their dinuguan and it was really good. A visit to this heritage house is definitely an experience for the mind, body, and soul.
 
Philippine American Cemetery
 
On one side of district, a solemn place stands as a memorial to the long-standing relations of the Philippines and the Unites States. The Philippine American Cemetery, along Commission Civil Street, is the only cemetery of its kind outside of Metro Manila. The one-hectare memorial was established in 1908. It pre-dates the Manila American Cemetery in Taguig.
There was a British Cemetery that existed during the Spanish period. The Philippine American Cemetery was established by American enlisted personnel after the Americans captured Iloilo from Spain. Some of the remains from the former cemetery was interred here. There’s a move to include the cemetery as part of the heritage sites in Iloilo.
 
Balantang Memorial Cemetery National Shrine
 
The Balantang Memorial Cemetery National Shrine is a national shrine that honors the freedom fighters of Panay and Romblon who stood their ground against the Japanese. Located along the outskirts of the district, it was in this area where one of the bloodiest battles in happened during the liberation of the island. Filipino Freedom Fighters took a fierce stand on this hallowed ground against the Japanese, despite being outnumbered, to pave the way for the allied forces to land in Tigbauan. It paved the way for the liberation of Panay Island from thr Japanese Imperial Army.

The Tomb of the Unknown Heroes in BMCNS.
A national shrine now stands to recognize the bravery of Filipinos during World War 2. A pylon is the centerpiece of the shrine where the NHI marker was installed recognizing the historical significance of Balantang. A tomb for the unknown soldiers stands behind the pylon to honor the unknown heroes of the war and a heroes’ wall where the names of the 1,421 casualties of Balantang were inscribed. There are also crypts along the perimeters of the shrine where the remains of its heroes are interred.
 
Getting there: You can take a jeep with the Leganes sign at the Old Jaro Municipal Hall. Ask the driver to drop you off at the Balantang Memorial Cemetery National Shrine.
 
The Heritage Mansions of Jaro
 
Jaro has been one of the rich areas of Iloilo. This is evident when you walk around the central business area of the district where you get to admire its collection of heritage mansions and houses. From well-preserved mansions to dilapidated ones, it gives you a preview of the colorful and extravagant past of Jaro.
The Lopez Heritage House, or more popularly called Nelly’s Garden, is one of the most visited mansions in Jaro. Located along E. Lopez Street, it is an eye-catcher with its white mansion sitting along a 4-hectare manicured lawn. It was built in 1928 by Don Vicente Lopez and Dona Elena Hofilena. Its grand architecture gives you a glimpse of the affluent lives of the rich families in Jaro. It was declared a National Heritage House in 2004 and it is often referred to as the “Queen of Heritage Houses in Iloilo”.

Just a few meters from the plaza, you will also find the Casa Mariquit or the Javellana-Lopez Heritage House. Built in 1803, the house follows the bahay-na-bato architecture. It was home to the late former Vice President Fernando Lopez, Sr. who served under the administration of Quirino and Marcos, Sr. The house was restored and is now museum.
There are also well-preserved mansions along the outskirts of the city. The Lizares-Gamboa Mansion inside Angelicum is another heritage mansion that is worth admiring. It was built in 1937 under Beaux-Arts architecture. The house had seen the glory and horrors of World War 2. It was declared an Important Cultural Property in 2024. It now re-used as a chapel by Angelicum School of Iloilo.

The heritage houses of Jaro, and Iloilo City as a whole, is worthy of a separate feature. These houses are snapshots of the past that gives you the distinct vibe from the time period that it was built. It gives you a glimpse of what architectural beauty exists during that time. These houses were mute witnesses to the glory and gore that Jaro experienced in past 
 
 
POST TRAVEL NOTES
Jaro has that distinct elegant aura when you explore its streets. The church, the plaza, and the mansions, fused with modern structures, give it that old town charm. Walking its streets made me feel that I was walking along the millionaires’ row of Jaro’s past. Jaro engages you with the glory and extravagance of its rich and famous.

Each destination and its line of attractions engage you with a particular character. This character makes each destination uniquely its own. Hindi kelangan ihambing o ihalintulad ang ganda ng sariling lugar sa mas kilalang puntahan para maka-engganyo ng bisita. Learn to appreciate what you have and see its uniqueness because that will encourage more tourists to your place.

​Getting there: There are daily flights from Manila and key cities of the Philippines to Iloilo. Once you arrive at Iloilo International Airport, there are TNVS and taxis that can take you to Jaro Church or Plaza where you can start your exploration of the district.
 
Alternatively, you can take a van to SM City Iloilo. Once you are at SM, you need to cross to the other side where you can take a jeep with the Leganes sign. Ask the driver to drop you off at the Jaro Plaza.

Over the past months, the island started to get traction after its beauty took social media by storm. The attention has moved the island to rise above history textbooks to becoming one of the hotspots on this side of Visayas. This is Limasawa - an island where its beauty is weaved in its stories.

Time to get wet in Limasawa Island.
History has been nice to the island of Limasawa. This island municipality was the site where the first Christian mass was heard paving the way for the evangelization of the country. At a length of 10 kilometers from its northern tip to the south, it stands as smallest municipality in Southern Leyte, both in size and population. We already explored the island through its land trails and, for this travel blog, let’s see what lies beneath the waters of Limasawa.
 
Limasawa Sanctuary (Entrance Fee: Php100)
 
The Limasawa Sanctuary is a coastal stretch that lies on the northeast side of the island. The protected area coast lies along the cliff sides of Limasawa. There are a few rocky coves that boats can dock on where guests can enjoy a quick dip or snorkeling in the area.

Our boat docked in one of its small rocky cove along the rugged coast. It was a ruggedly cozy and homey but there was nothing really special about it because, on this side of the island, the beauty lies under the waters of the island. We put on our snorkelling gears and, with just a few kicks from the shoreline, we were enthralled by the beauty of the coral reefs of the Limasawa Sanctuary.

Non-swimmers can get to enjoy the underwater beauty.
The underwater scene of the sanctuary bursts in different colors. I was captivated by the rich marine ecosystem flourishing underneath the waters of Limasawa. I enjoyed watching a variety of fish bobbing in and out of the coral reefs in the area. The current carries you through a myriad of living and colourful coral reefs of the sanctuary. I even caught a glimpse of a parent Nemos guarding their “home”. It was a an underwater world bursting into life right before my eyes. The Limasawa Sanctuary was proof of how rich the island’s resources under its waters.
 
Magallanes Port
 
The Magallanes Port is one of the entry ports to the island of Limasawa. Interestingly, it is also the most popular, not for its structure, but for what lies under its waters. The port lies along the white sand coast of Baranggay Magallanes and the depth of its waters make it more conducive for RORO and larger boats to dock on. Magallanes Port facilities here are more developed making it the gateway to the island.

Sea Turtles are residents of the waters of the port.
The beauty of the Magallanes Port is hidden under its waters. The port and the surrounding white sand shorelines are calm that makes its conducive for its frequent visitor - the sea turtle. Most social media post about the island marvels at sea turtle sightings along the coastal waters of Limasawa. We did get the same favor of swimming with two sea turtles along the waters of the port. We had a great time swimming alongside these gentle sea creatures.
Further down the dock, adventure seekers can marvel at the rich underwater scene along the foundations of the port. This is where free divers get their dose of the Limasawa underwater scene. The foundations of the port has become a home of many coral reefs giving it that beautiful and dramatic underwater scene. Free divers and enthusiasts visit the spot for that socmed-worthy shots. This is one reason why I want to head back to Limasawa.
 
Talisay Beach
 
Talisay Beach is a secluded beach cove on the southern end of the island. This beach spot has a shoreline that is filled with pebbles and shells with pockets of white sand. It is pristine and untouched, giving this cove a more rustic and calming vibe. Locals frequent this beach spot especially during the weekends.

The boulders at the end of its beach hides secluded small coves of the beach. It is easier to access this area during low tide because you can wade through the waters along its coast. You will be amazed by the rock formations and its nooks and crannies. You can find your own spot along the crevices of its rock formations to enjoy the sound of the waves and the serene vibe of the place. Our boatman-guide said that you can also cliff jump in the area during high tide.

You can explore the rock formations during low tide.
From the coast of Talisay Beach, you can also catch a glimpse of the Limasawa South Parola.  The lighthouse stands along one of the cliff area of the southern end of Limasawa. The coast on this side is a mix of both cliffs and rocky coves. The spot offers a panoramic view of the Bohol Sea.
 
Cabulihan – Magallanes Rock Formations
 
We ended our boat tour sailing along the southwest coast of the island. This side of the island is more rugged with a combination of rock formations and jagged cliffs. There are small coves that emerge during low tide but you can already see, from the rock formations, how nature molded these rocks through time.

The rock formations come in different forms and sizes. Umbrella rock formations are plentiful, with some forming like snake heads facing the waters of the Bohol Sea. There are rock formations where seawater carved small caves and crevices. These crevices are probably are home to many nocturnal creatures of the island. Its beauty is best appreciated from afar with one’s imagination playing with the rock formations of Limasawa Island.
 
Sidenote: The boat tour around the island of Limasawa Island also included beach stops at Dakdak Beach and the Lagoon Beach Resort. I already included both sites in my previous travel blog so I did not include it on this blog.
 
 
POST TRAVEL NOTES
Limasawa Island is a great destination to explore both on land and sea. Its natural beauty perfectly fuses with its culture and history. It does not just amuse you with its stories but it also charms you with its beauty above the ground and under the sea. More importantly, it immerses you to the old Philippine island atmosphere where everything slows down for you to appreciate the small things happening around you.

​Getting there: From Manila, you can take a flight to Tacloban and then take a van to Maasin. You can take a jeep to Padre Burgos Port and take a ferry to Limasawa Island.
 
If you are coming from Cebu (like we did), you can take a Fastcraft to Maasin Port. Once in Maasin Port, walk to the main highway where you can take a jeep to Padre Burgos. You can then take a ferry to Limasawa from the Padre Burgos Port.
 
Once in Limasawa, you can take a trike to your accommodation.

It is an island that oozes with natural beauty and a colorful history to share. These two interests fused together was enough for my curiosity to get hold of me to finally take on the long trip to explore the beauty of Limasawa Island, Southern Leyte.

Welcome to my Limasawa Island of my 72nd province - Southern Leyte!
Limasawa Island is an island municipality of Southern Leyte, the 72nd province of my #GOT82PH project. Located on the southern end of the province, most Filipinos would be able to easily recognize the island as it has been widely discussed in Philippine history. The island was believed to be the site of the first Catholic mass in the country and that paved the way for the country to become the only country in Asia that is pre-dominantly Christian. We will be going around the island in my next two blogs, by land and by sea, to check out the stories and the beauty that Limasawa has to offer.
 
Welcome to Limasawa Signage
 
The famous rockwall is the first to greet you as you arrive the Port of Limasawa. The welcome sign painted in white is already a tourism icon of the island. It gets pretty crowded throughout the day  because Limasawa guests line up for that I-am-here shot with the popular sign. Quick tip, head up to the signage early in the morning for that shots without the tourist crowd.

The welcome sign lies along the main road of the island. The road was carved from the side of a hill, creating this dramatic rock wall. This spot also welcomes tourists with a panoramic view of the coast of the poblacion. Locals painted the sign to welcome guests visiting the island, not knowing that this small task would lead to this spot to becoming one of the icons of the island.
 
Island Lagoon Resort and North Lighthouse
 
The best way to explore Limasawa on land is by renting a motorcycle or by getting a trike tour. Organized by Limasawa JSKJ Motor Rental and Tricycle Tour, we first explored the island on board a tricycle for only Php350 per head (total of 4 pax). The tour brought us to the land attractions of the island. Our first stop for the day is the Island Lagoon Resort and the North Lighthouse.

The Island Lagoon Resort is a popular resort known for its cliffs and lagoons.
Located along the northern end of Limasawa, the Island Lagoon Resort sits adjacent to the North Lighthouse. The trike ride is about 20 minutes from the poblacion and you would have to take a 15-minute walk to the resort entrance. You will catch a glimpse of the modern lighthouse along the way.

Be forewarned though that the way to the resort is along a very steep cemented stairs. The resort was built along the cliffside of the island facing mainland Southern Leyte. The resort can be accessed via the steep stairs (if you are doing a land tour) and along a small cove (if you are doing the island boat tour). We tried both during our Limasawa trip.

The lagoon is a cluster of rock formations that form an enclosed beach area. The cliff side has crevices where concrete pathways, beach huts, and facilities were built for guests. The towering rock formations on other side create a natural boundary against the open sea creating a lagoon in the middle. There are crevices and openings that allow sea water to come in the lagoon. These rocks also serve as platforms where you can cliff jump during high tide.
 
Little Batanes
 
Little Batanes is a quick stop just a short distance away from the Cross of Magellan. Located atop one of the hills of Limasawa, it is a vantage point where you can see the waters that guard the island on both side - the Bohol Sea and Sogod Bay. You can catch a glimpse of Bohol, Surigao, and the other side of Southern Leyte on a clear day.

It probably got its monicker because the viewpoint offers a panoramic view of the east coast of the island. You can appreciate how its hills roll down to meet the waters of the Bohol Sea, similar to one of the popular view decks in Batanes. Honestly, “Little Batanes” can stand on its own, minus the comparison. It would be good if they can rename it to one that would reflect a more Limasawa-owned vibe.
 
First Cross Monument
 
The First Cross Monument is a historic site where Magellan planted the first cross in the Philippines in 1521. The wooden cross stands atop the hill, above the site where the first Catholic mass was held in the country. There are two ways to get to the cross. You can first start from the site of the first mass and walk up the concrete steps to the cross or you can start from the cross and move down to the base of the hill. We did the latter.

The cross, which I presume is a replica, is mounted on a pedestal on a circular platform. It surrounded by trees and, with the cool sea breeze blowing from the sea, make it a perfect spot to just relax and enjoy its vibe. A cemented stair-pathway connects the cross with anothwr historical site on the island. The pathway offers amazing views of the eastern coast of Limasawa.
 
The Limasawa Shrine of the First Mass in the Philippines
 
The cemented pathway lead down to the Limasawa Shrine of the First Mass in the Philippines. The park marks the spot where the first Catholic Mass was held. It is complete with manicured lawns leading to a small building where the NHI marker was installed to signify the historical significance of the area.

The main building bears a tableau of the first mass with Magellan, Father Valderrama, Rajah Colambu, and Raja Si-Agu in prayer. The walls are also lined with paintings of Magellan’s voyage  to the Philippines, the first Catholic mass, and the mounting of the cross. A guide will also give you a brief on Limasawa island and the story of Pinoy hospitality that led to the first mass on March 31, 1521.

The park has benches where you can enjoy its rustic vibe. A wishing well sits adjacent to the structure where guests can flip a coin, make a wish, and ring the bell. The shrine is an attraction so expect the crowd especially during weekends. There are small snack shops at the entrance of the shrine where you can take a quick snack.
 
Dakdak Beach Resort
 
The island of Limasawa is a rugged island with rock formations and cliffs dominating its seascape. There are pockets of white sand spots but are limited. One of the spots is the Dakdak Beach Resort. It is one of the popular resorts on the island and has become an attraction in itself.

Dakdak Beach Resort is one of developed and well-landscaped resorts in Limasawa. It sits on an area where the mountains meet the sea. Cottages, for overnight stays, and cabanas line its coastline. The shoreline of the resort is white sand with a mix of corals and shells. The coast is a bit rocky when you take a dip. There are two off-shore platforms that offer a panoramic view of ita beach area. It also serves as a platform where you can jump into its waters during high tide.

This beach spot is part of both the land and boat tours of the island. It has gained popularity due to its exposure on social media. It is safe to expect that there would be a bit of waiting time when getting into the resort since they manage the number of people inside the resort. The resort also has a restaurant that offers good food. But expect service to take time especially during peak hours.
 
Bad-as Peak
 
Bad-as Peak is the highest peak in the island of Limasawa. It offers a panoramic view of the poblacion and the southern tip of the island. It is a popular spot to end the day among travelers and locals because it offers the best view of Limasawa’s sunset. The adjacent peak of Totoy-Totoy is also an alternative sunset spot on the island.

Unfortunately, we were not able to catch the sunset in Limasawa since cloud covers obscured the view. Our guide said that these cloud covers indicate that the habagat season is set to come in. We came in ahead of the crowd so we got to enjoy the unobstructed view of the coastline of Limasawa. Again, expect the crowds during the late afternoons since it is a popular spot in Limasawa. 
 
Limasawa Municipal Hall and Baywalk
 
On the southern end of the island, you will find the modest Limasawa Municipal Hall. It serves as the center of governance and service of the island-municipality. Tucked within the compound is the Limasawa Quincentennial Historical Marker of Magellan’s voyage around the world. It indicates that Magellan stepped on the island during his voyage. The marker is a reminder of Limasawa’s historical significance in both Philippine and world history.

In front of the government center is the Limasawa Baywalk. It is a small strip by the beach that was developed as a a baywalk that gives you a beautiful view of the Triana coastline and the Bohol Sea. This is where you will also find Limasawa Island Marker. This spot is often overlooked by tourists so you get to enjoy the spot without the usual crowd. At the base of the marker are the footprint marks of outstanding locals of the island.

The Limasawa Baywalk is also a good spot to catch the sunset.
The spot is also a good spot to watch the sunset. There is a small beach strip adjacent to the area where you can enjoy the sea breeze while waiting for the sun to set. Its rugged coast emerge during low tide and locals go about their routine of finding shellfish in the area. I enjoyed the spot watching the sunset even with the cloud cover. I enjoyed the dramatic play of sunset colors on the rugged coast of Limasawa. Definitely, a perfect spot to end my Limasawa visit.

POST TRAVEL NOTES
Limasawa Island was a perfect birthday trip and introduction to my 72nd province in my #GOT82PH project. The island fuses history and natural beauty in one perfect travel adventure. It was laidback, rustic, and homey. I enjoyed how it slowed me down to enjoy the day go by. It made a huge impression on me that I must say that every Filipino needs to see… ang ganda ng Limasawa!

There are a thousand islands to discover in the Philippines. Every island has its own story and beauty to explore and enjoy. Some islands are easy to access with just a plane and/or boat ride away. Others islands make the travel to reach it an adventure in itself. Based on my experience, the latter gets you out of your comfort zone to enjoy a different kind of island adventure.

​Getting there: From Manila, you can take a flight to Tacloban and then take a van to Maasin. You can take a jeep to Padre Burgos Port and take a ferry to Limasawa Island.
 
If you are coming from Cebu (like we did), you can take a Fastcraft to Maasin Port. Once in Maasin Port, walk to the main highway where you can take a jeep to Padre Burgos. You can then take a ferry to Limasawa from the Padre Burgos Port.
 
Once in Limasawa, you can take a trike to your accommodation. PinkApple and Natalie’s Beach House offers basic accommodations in Limasawa Island. You can reach them through their Facebook page.

The strip is not a white sand shoreline, like what most people look for, but the rustic vibe it evoked caught my attention. I had to experience it for myself so I went out to check kung bongga nga ba ang Sibonga!

The beach cove that pushed me to visit Sibonga!
Just two hours away from the city of Cebu, Sibonga is a small and quaint municipality that is popular as a pilgrimage site Local stories share that the name Sibonga was derived from the name of betel nut palm trees that once grew abundant in the town. It was established as a separate town and parish in 1830. Beyond the faith, the town has pockets of attractions that give you a glimpse of its history and the laidback vibe of its community.
 
Nuestra Señora del Pilar Church (Sibonga Church)
 
At the heart of the town is the Nuestra Senora del Pilar Church, more popularly called as Sibonga Church. This Spanish-period church and its convent will catch your attention as you breeze through the town since it is right along the highway. The church was originally a visita under Carcar until its was declared an independent church in 1830. The church honors the Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Zaragoza as its patron saint.

The present structure started construction in 1866, under the neo-gothic architecture. It was in 1898 that the stone church was finally completed. Interestingly the adjacent church convent stands older than the church, having been built in 1839. Built from coral stones, the church convent was designed by Bishop Maranon of Cebu. Both structures remain to be a strong remembrance of Spanish rule in Sibonga.

The church interior is simple and elegant. The altar is the centerpoint of the church where the image of the Nuestra Senora del Pilar was mounted. The coral stone and pillars of its nave are well-preserved and intact. Just like other churches in Visayas, the ceiling murals are a real beauty. These biblical ceiling paintings were done by Cebu artist, Raymundo Francia, and was completed in 1924.
 
Sibonga Heritage Park
 
The Sibonga Heritage Park is a wide open-space park located near the church. The space offers a chill out space for locals and guests who just want to relax and enjoy the day or the moment pass. The large and old trees along the plaza offer a quick relief from the heat with its shade and the cool sea breeze.

The plaza is complete with benches and canopies where you can just sit back and enjoy watching what is happening around the town. It is surrounded by structures that date back to the different time periods of Sibonga. It gives you a glimpse of the town’s colorful past. Sitting on a bench and just watching gave me a nostalgic feel of that old town vibe.
 
Sibonga Municipal Hall and Plaza
 
Just a stone throw away from the Sibonga Heritage Park is the Sibonga Municipal Plaza. In contrast to the former, the sprawling park is manicured with cemented pathways and manicured gardens. A monument of Dr. Jose Rizal stands as the centerpiece of the park. The park is best visited during the early mornings or late afternoon because it has less tree covers and offers very little shade cover during the day.

The Sibonga Municipal Hall at the far end of the plaza.
At the far end of the plaza stands the Sibonga Municipal Hall. The center of governance of the town was built in American-period architecture. In front of the building is a statue of the Late President Ramon Magsaysay with the inscription of being the “Champion of the Poor”. I guess President Magsaysay has a strong connection with the people of the Sibonga. Behind the Municipal Hall is the Sibonga Wharf that offers a panoramic view of the town and the Cebu Strait.
 
Balai Ortiz and Heritage Cafe
 
Just a few meters walk from the town center, I came across an ancestral house where the first floor was converted into a cafe - the Balai Heritage Cafe. It caught my attention because of its American-style architecture. Interestingly, one of the residents was one of the individuals who had a first-hand account of the death of Former President Ramon Magsaysay. This quaint home was the ancestral home of the Ortiz Family of Sibonga.

The first floor of the house was converted into a cafe that offers meals and snacks. It also has common areas where guests can enjoy group and board games while waiting for their orders. The cafe is neatly designed to be homey with artworks displayed along its walls. I really enjoyed the crispy dinuguan that I ordered - a must try.

The museum is a repository of the family's heirloom.
The second floor serves as the museum that displays the heirloom of the Ortiz Family. You get a glimpse of their simple life in Sibonga as you walk through the house. Antique objects and photographs owned by the family are on display around the house. There were also news clippings on the death of President Magsaysay were also mounted on the wall. As it turns out, Mr. Mario Ortiz, was one of the first responders to the crash site of the late president in Mount Manunggal.
 
Monastery of the Holy Eucharist (Simala Shrine)
 
At the center of the faith in Sibonga is the Monastery of the Holy Eucharist, which also known as the Simala Shrine or the Our Lady of Lindogon Shrine. This pilgrimage church was built on 1998 by the Marian Monks of Eucharistic Adoration from Pampanga. What makes its stand out is its castle-like structure that was built along the hills of Sibonga. The construction of the church was part of the vision of Ingko Niyong Villamayor who believed that the hills of Lindogon would be holy once the image is enshrined in the area.

The Simala Shrine is both a pilgrimage and tourist attraction in Sibonga.
What will strike you the most when you visit this pilgrimage church is how the monastery was built. It is massive and grand with its castle-like architectural design. The structure was built along the hills following the contours of the land it sits on. Towers jut out on the corners of its walkways. A manicured courtyard stands in the middle of its structure. Its main church stands in the background of its courtyard. The church is still undergoing construction with its expansion.

Pilgrims visit the image of the Our Lady of Lindogon.
The main church has an elaborately designed nave that glows in gold. The altar has the Holy Eucharist as its centrepiece  and above it is the image of the Our Lady of Lindogon that is believed to be miraculous. Many devotees line up just to touch the image and offer their petitions. Devotees of the Virgin Mary claim that the image provided healing to those who were afflicted with dengue outbreak in the area in 1998. The image is also believed to have shed tears in 4 different occasions. The monastery is a pilgrimage site so one needs to dress properly when entering the shrine.
 
Old Simala Railway Station
 
Tucked in a small corner of the Simala Elementary School is a small building that was once part of a railway system in Cebu. Yes… you heard it right that Cebu had a railway system that run from Argao, in the south, to Danao, up north. It had 14 stations that spanned 57 miles across the island. Unfortunately, the railway system
fell victim to World War 2 bombings and only a few structures remain standing today.

The small railway station in Sibonga is one of the few reminders of the train station. However, you won’t see any historical markers that would indicate the history of the said spot. It was repurposed by the school as a storage room, although, I have read that it was turned into a library. It would be nice though if the provincial and/or local government could put a marker that would highlight the historical value of the place.
 
Aroma Beach
 
Hidden behind the mangrove covers of Sibonga, Aroma Beach is a small beach cove that has been popular among locals for years. Its brown-colored sandy coast is a great way to enjoy a quick beach fix in Sibonga. The cove is just a few meters walk from the highway through a tree-lined rough road. This beach spot is a great way to watch how locals enjoy a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Aroma Beach is a public beach and a no-frills beach spot. As soon as you reach the cove, you will notice its tree-lined shore. There are no huts for rent so you get to find your own corner along the cove. If you have a hammock with you, you can prop it up between the trees. Locals bring their own mats or tents to set up. I came in with just my bag so I just found my spot under the cover of one of its trees.

Since it is a no-frills beach spot, expect to enjoy a chill lowkey experience. You can explore the mangrove covers on both ends of the cove or wade through its waters. There are no basic facilities in the area - no showers and no toilets. There are ruins of a house in the area that you can use to change clothes but that is just it. I just hope that the LGU can take the lead to secure and tidy-up Aroma Beach because its raw beauty gets spoiled with garbage left by beachgoers and broken bottles in the area.

POST TRAVEL NOTES
More than just a pilgrimage site, the town of Sibonga has pockets of interesting sites that give you a glimpse of its beauty and colorful past. Exploring the poblacion gave me the thrill on its history with its well-preserved structures, that date back to the different time periods of the country. Its no-frillls attractions and beach spots assures you that life is simple and you just need to pause and breathe in its beauty. Sibonga does teach you a lot about faith and life.

Our next stop is a destination made from legends and folklore.
More often than not, a lot of travelers keep their eyes on the hot items on their tourism checklist. We are often excited checkout the more popular spots or the social media savvy ones. But if we take a pause to stop briefly and just explore more, you will be surprised to discover how colorful a destination that you just usually pass through. Try it… just explore one destination along the way.

Getting there: There are daily flights to the Mactan-Cebu International Airport from major local and international airports. You can take a cab or a TNVS ride to the Cebu South Bus Terminal. Alternatively, you can take a bus to SM City Cebu then a jeepney ride to the Cebu South Bus Terminal.
 
You can purchase a Ceres Bus ticket for Sibonga. Buses bound for Argao and Oslob pass through Sibonga. Just ask the driver to drop you off at the Poblacion.

It does not have the usual white sand coasts of the popular destinations found in northern Cebu. In fact, its coastline’s been catching attention for its rocky coast. The perfect mix of chill and rugged vibe of Catmon lets your mind flow deep in its meow-sings (musings).

Exploring another off-beat spot in Cebu.
Just two hours away from the city, Catmon is a small town that travelers usually just pass through when they are headed to the more popular North Cebu destinations. The name of the town was derived from the huge trees, katmon, that thrive in the area. It was under the Spanish rule that it was founded as a municipality to which it has kept its status until today. Social media users have taken interest with the town, highlighting its rugged coastline and cliff spots facing the Camotes Sea.
 
San Guillermo Parish Church (Catmon Church)
 
The San Guillermo Parish Church was initially a mission station of the Augustinian Recollects, under the Danao Church. It was then declared a separate visita in 1835. Situated atop a hill, the site where the church stands was the third and final choice for its location and overlooks the town center and the Camotes Sea. The present structure was completed in 1875 and is one of the oldest churches in the province and in the country

The San Guillermo Parish Church is one of the oldest churches in the province.
Built from coral stones, the facade of the church was designed with a triangular roof entryway structure. It is highlighted by arched windows with the central arch window depicting an image of the Holy Eucharist. The facade was completed in 1875. A three-story belfry flanks the church with its hexagonal shaped upper floors, highlighted with arched windows. The belfry is capped with a dome. The belfry and the facade were undergoing rehabilitation after it was damaged by the Bogo Earthquake last year.

The modern-design altar is an eye-catcher.
The interior was a fusion of modern and past architecture. A large part of its old walls remain intact. These wall foundations were built in 1868. A portion of the church’s interior were made in concrete. Its altar is modern in design with the image of the Crucified Christ as its centerpiece. A side niche bears the image of the town’s patron saint, St. William the Hermit.
 
Tinubdan Falls
 
Tucked in the hinterlands of Catmon is a waterfall attraction that was once a popular attraction among locals and tourists. Tinubdan Falls is a multi-cascade waterfalls in Catmon. A 45-minute habal-habal ride will get you to the jump-off point. From the jump-off point, a 20-minute hike along a dirt trail will get you to the first level of Tinubdan’s cascade.

Tinubdan Falls lie along the forested area of Catmon. Its water cascades in two levels. The top level has a single cascade where water falls from a height of about 4 feet into a small base pool. Boulders dot the surroundings of the base pool. The water then flows further down into multiple cascades along a rock face of the second level into multiple base pools. The beauty of the waterfalls is best seen at the base second level, however, access restrictions in the area did not give us the privilege to see the beauty of its downstream cascade.

The waterfall was closed due to an accident.
A tragic accident in 2021, that claimed the lives of 3 locals, was the reason for the closure of Tinubdan Falls. Our guide, Kuya Jonard, shared with us that the waters can easily go torrential within minutes since the water flows from the mountains in Cebu. Sadly, the setback has kept the beauty of Tinubdan Falls away from the tourism spotlight. I hope that the LGU can help in making access and appreciation of Tinubdan Falls safer for the benefit of the community and its locals.
 
Esoy Hot Spring
 
Esoy Hot Spring is another popular attraction in Catmon. Nestled along a gorge, the resort has a collection of pools that collect natural sulphur-rich hot spring water for a relaxing and therapeutic dip. It is one of the two natural thermal pools that you can find the province of Cebu. It is a private resort and setting an appointment is encouraged, although, we were lucky that we were able to walk-in during the visit.

You would have to navigate through a steep cemented pathway down to the receiving area of the hot spring resort. The resort fees give you access to the thermal pools in the area. There are small pools in the area and a big one on the lower level of the resort. A crevice on the rock face of the ravine serves as the main source of its hot spring water.
 
Ka-Tinggo Falls
 
Apart from the hot springs, Esoy Hot Spring also offers access to Ka-Tinggo Falls. This waterfall attraction is located along the headwaters of the river that flows below the resort. You can get a full package at the resort that will give you access to the falls and to the resort.

The adventure to Ka-Tinggo Falls starts with crossing the rickety hanging bridge to the other side of the ridge. From here, it will take about a 30-minute hike to the base pool of the falls. The trail runs along the riverbed and will have you clambering over rocks and crossing the river. The last stretch of the “trail” is swimming against the water flow of its base pool.

You can see the beauty of Ka-Tinggo while swimming.
Ka-Tinggo Falls is a strong single cascade between two rock face of the gorge. Water cascades into a very deep aquamarine pool. Getting close to the cascade is a challenge because of its strong water current. We enjoyed the cold dip at the base pool while enjoying the sights and sounds of the falls. We also got to enjoy the view of the gorge as we floated downstream back to the resort.
 
Catmon Coast
 
Catmon does not have the usual stretch of white sand coast. Its coast is mostly rocky and cliffs, with small pockets of sandy coast. Resorts, situated along the rocky cliffs, have started to get traction from motorcycle riders and tourists for the views and the extra adrenaline rush when they dive into the blue waters of the sea from the cliffs.

We were able to enjoy the chill laidback vibe of its rocky coast in one of the roadside resorts along the highway. The coast was mostly rock floor base and void of sandy shorelines. We enjoyed the laidback chill vibe of this coastal town.  Catmon is a great spot to enjoy a quick beach break from the urban buzz of Cebu.

Catmon is a laidback town that is an easy alternative for a weekend break when you find yourself in Cebu. Whether you want to relax by the beach or enjoy a hot dip, it can give you that relaxing breather after a week of urban hustle or exploring around the province. It can also give you that adrenaline rush as you get to experience the more rustic and sublime side of Cebu.

Fusing fitness and heritage on our next travel.
It is exciting that apart from off-beat travelers, we now have riders who put the spotlight on destinations that, more often than not, do not get noticed. These riders, mainly due to the convenience of their motorcycles, are able to venture deeper into destinations that would eventually lead to the discovery of the local’s hidden spots. It is great to see that as we discover more, we are able to open new opportunities for the locals and the communities.
