Over the past months, the island started to get traction after its beauty took social media by storm. The attention has moved the island to rise above history textbooks to becoming one of the hotspots on this side of Visayas. This is Limasawa - an island where its beauty is weaved in its stories.

Time to get wet in Limasawa Island.
History has been nice to the island of Limasawa. This island municipality was the site where the first Christian mass was heard paving the way for the evangelization of the country. At a length of 10 kilometers from its northern tip to the south, it stands as smallest municipality in Southern Leyte, both in size and population. We already explored the island through its land trails and, for this travel blog, let’s see what lies beneath the waters of Limasawa.
 
Limasawa Sanctuary (Entrance Fee: Php100)
 
The Limasawa Sanctuary is a coastal stretch that lies on the northeast side of the island. The protected area coast lies along the cliff sides of Limasawa. There are a few rocky coves that boats can dock on where guests can enjoy a quick dip or snorkeling in the area.

Our boat docked in one of its small rocky cove along the rugged coast. It was a ruggedly cozy and homey but there was nothing really special about it because, on this side of the island, the beauty lies under the waters of the island. We put on our snorkelling gears and, with just a few kicks from the shoreline, we were enthralled by the beauty of the coral reefs of the Limasawa Sanctuary.

Non-swimmers can get to enjoy the underwater beauty.
The underwater scene of the sanctuary bursts in different colors. I was captivated by the rich marine ecosystem flourishing underneath the waters of Limasawa. I enjoyed watching a variety of fish bobbing in and out of the coral reefs in the area. The current carries you through a myriad of living and colourful coral reefs of the sanctuary. I even caught a glimpse of a parent Nemos guarding their “home”. It was a an underwater world bursting into life right before my eyes. The Limasawa Sanctuary was proof of how rich the island’s resources under its waters.
 
Magallanes Port
 
The Magallanes Port is one of the entry ports to the island of Limasawa. Interestingly, it is also the most popular, not for its structure, but for what lies under its waters. The port lies along the white sand coast of Baranggay Magallanes and the depth of its waters make it more conducive for RORO and larger boats to dock on. Magallanes Port facilities here are more developed making it the gateway to the island.

Sea Turtles are residents of the waters of the port.
The beauty of the Magallanes Port is hidden under its waters. The port and the surrounding white sand shorelines are calm that makes its conducive for its frequent visitor - the sea turtle. Most social media post about the island marvels at sea turtle sightings along the coastal waters of Limasawa. We did get the same favor of swimming with two sea turtles along the waters of the port. We had a great time swimming alongside these gentle sea creatures.
Further down the dock, adventure seekers can marvel at the rich underwater scene along the foundations of the port. This is where free divers get their dose of the Limasawa underwater scene. The foundations of the port has become a home of many coral reefs giving it that beautiful and dramatic underwater scene. Free divers and enthusiasts visit the spot for that socmed-worthy shots. This is one reason why I want to head back to Limasawa.
 
Talisay Beach
 
Talisay Beach is a secluded beach cove on the southern end of the island. This beach spot has a shoreline that is filled with pebbles and shells with pockets of white sand. It is pristine and untouched, giving this cove a more rustic and calming vibe. Locals frequent this beach spot especially during the weekends.

The boulders at the end of its beach hides secluded small coves of the beach. It is easier to access this area during low tide because you can wade through the waters along its coast. You will be amazed by the rock formations and its nooks and crannies. You can find your own spot along the crevices of its rock formations to enjoy the sound of the waves and the serene vibe of the place. Our boatman-guide said that you can also cliff jump in the area during high tide.

You can explore the rock formations during low tide.
From the coast of Talisay Beach, you can also catch a glimpse of the Limasawa South Parola.  The lighthouse stands along one of the cliff area of the southern end of Limasawa. The coast on this side is a mix of both cliffs and rocky coves. The spot offers a panoramic view of the Bohol Sea.
 
Cabulihan – Magallanes Rock Formations
 
We ended our boat tour sailing along the southwest coast of the island. This side of the island is more rugged with a combination of rock formations and jagged cliffs. There are small coves that emerge during low tide but you can already see, from the rock formations, how nature molded these rocks through time.

The rock formations come in different forms and sizes. Umbrella rock formations are plentiful, with some forming like snake heads facing the waters of the Bohol Sea. There are rock formations where seawater carved small caves and crevices. These crevices are probably are home to many nocturnal creatures of the island. Its beauty is best appreciated from afar with one’s imagination playing with the rock formations of Limasawa Island.
 
Sidenote: The boat tour around the island of Limasawa Island also included beach stops at Dakdak Beach and the Lagoon Beach Resort. I already included both sites in my previous travel blog so I did not include it on this blog.
 
 
POST TRAVEL NOTES
Limasawa Island is a great destination to explore both on land and sea. Its natural beauty perfectly fuses with its culture and history. It does not just amuse you with its stories but it also charms you with its beauty above the ground and under the sea. More importantly, it immerses you to the old Philippine island atmosphere where everything slows down for you to appreciate the small things happening around you.

Getting there: From Manila, you can take a flight to Tacloban and then take a van to Maasin. You can take a jeep to Padre Burgos Port and take a ferry to Limasawa Island.
 
If you are coming from Cebu (like we did), you can take a Fastcraft to Maasin Port. Once in Maasin Port, walk to the main highway where you can take a jeep to Padre Burgos. You can then take a ferry to Limasawa from the Padre Burgos Port.
 
Once in Limasawa, you can take a trike to your accommodation.

It is an island that oozes with natural beauty and a colorful history to share. These two interests fused together was enough for my curiosity to get hold of me to finally take on the long trip to explore the beauty of Limasawa Island, Southern Leyte.

Welcome to my Limasawa Island of my 72nd province - Southern Leyte!
Limasawa Island is an island municipality of Southern Leyte, the 72nd province of my #GOT82PH project. Located on the southern end of the province, most Filipinos would be able to easily recognize the island as it has been widely discussed in Philippine history. The island was believed to be the site of the first Catholic mass in the country and that paved the way for the country to become the only country in Asia that is pre-dominantly Christian. We will be going around the island in my next two blogs, by land and by sea, to check out the stories and the beauty that Limasawa has to offer.
 
Welcome to Limasawa Signage
 
The famous rockwall is the first to greet you as you arrive the Port of Limasawa. The welcome sign painted in white is already a tourism icon of the island. It gets pretty crowded throughout the day  because Limasawa guests line up for that I-am-here shot with the popular sign. Quick tip, head up to the signage early in the morning for that shots without the tourist crowd.

The welcome sign lies along the main road of the island. The road was carved from the side of a hill, creating this dramatic rock wall. This spot also welcomes tourists with a panoramic view of the coast of the poblacion. Locals painted the sign to welcome guests visiting the island, not knowing that this small task would lead to this spot to becoming one of the icons of the island.
 
Island Lagoon Resort and North Lighthouse
 
The best way to explore Limasawa on land is by renting a motorcycle or by getting a trike tour. Organized by Limasawa JSKJ Motor Rental and Tricycle Tour, we first explored the island on board a tricycle for only Php350 per head (total of 4 pax). The tour brought us to the land attractions of the island. Our first stop for the day is the Island Lagoon Resort and the North Lighthouse.

The Island Lagoon Resort is a popular resort known for its cliffs and lagoons.
Located along the northern end of Limasawa, the Island Lagoon Resort sits adjacent to the North Lighthouse. The trike ride is about 20 minutes from the poblacion and you would have to take a 15-minute walk to the resort entrance. You will catch a glimpse of the modern lighthouse along the way.

Be forewarned though that the way to the resort is along a very steep cemented stairs. The resort was built along the cliffside of the island facing mainland Southern Leyte. The resort can be accessed via the steep stairs (if you are doing a land tour) and along a small cove (if you are doing the island boat tour). We tried both during our Limasawa trip.

The lagoon is a cluster of rock formations that form an enclosed beach area. The cliff side has crevices where concrete pathways, beach huts, and facilities were built for guests. The towering rock formations on other side create a natural boundary against the open sea creating a lagoon in the middle. There are crevices and openings that allow sea water to come in the lagoon. These rocks also serve as platforms where you can cliff jump during high tide.
 
Little Batanes
 
Little Batanes is a quick stop just a short distance away from the Cross of Magellan. Located atop one of the hills of Limasawa, it is a vantage point where you can see the waters that guard the island on both side - the Bohol Sea and Sogod Bay. You can catch a glimpse of Bohol, Surigao, and the other side of Southern Leyte on a clear day.

It probably got its monicker because the viewpoint offers a panoramic view of the east coast of the island. You can appreciate how its hills roll down to meet the waters of the Bohol Sea, similar to one of the popular view decks in Batanes. Honestly, “Little Batanes” can stand on its own, minus the comparison. It would be good if they can rename it to one that would reflect a more Limasawa-owned vibe.
 
First Cross Monument
 
The First Cross Monument is a historic site where Magellan planted the first cross in the Philippines in 1521. The wooden cross stands atop the hill, above the site where the first Catholic mass was held in the country. There are two ways to get to the cross. You can first start from the site of the first mass and walk up the concrete steps to the cross or you can start from the cross and move down to the base of the hill. We did the latter.

The cross, which I presume is a replica, is mounted on a pedestal on a circular platform. It surrounded by trees and, with the cool sea breeze blowing from the sea, make it a perfect spot to just relax and enjoy its vibe. A cemented stair-pathway connects the cross with anothwr historical site on the island. The pathway offers amazing views of the eastern coast of Limasawa.

The cemented pathway lead down to the Limasawa Shrine of the First Mass in the Philippines. The park marks the spot where the first Catholic Mass was held. It is complete with manicured lawns leading to a small building where the NHI marker was installed to signify the historical significance of the area.

The main building bears a tableau of the first mass with Magellan, Father Valderrama, Rajah Colambu, and Raja Si-Agu in prayer. The walls are also lined with paintings of Magellan’s voyage  to the Philippines, the first Catholic mass, and the mounting of the cross. A guide will also give you a brief on Limasawa island and the story of Pinoy hospitality that led to the first mass on March 31, 1521.

The park has benches where you can enjoy its rustic vibe. A wishing well sits adjacent to the structure where guests can flip a coin, make a wish, and ring the bell. The shrine is an attraction so expect the crowd especially during weekends. There are small snack shops at the entrance of the shrine where you can take a quick snack.
 
Dakdak Beach Resort
 
The island of Limasawa is a rugged island with rock formations and cliffs dominating its seascape. There are pockets of white sand spots but are limited. One of the spots is the Dakdak Beach Resort. It is one of the popular resorts on the island and has become an attraction in itself.

Dakdak Beach Resort is one of developed and well-landscaped resorts in Limasawa. It sits on an area where the mountains meet the sea. Cottages, for overnight stays, and cabanas line its coastline. The shoreline of the resort is white sand with a mix of corals and shells. The coast is a bit rocky when you take a dip. There are two off-shore platforms that offer a panoramic view of ita beach area. It also serves as a platform where you can jump into its waters during high tide.

This beach spot is part of both the land and boat tours of the island. It has gained popularity due to its exposure on social media. It is safe to expect that there would be a bit of waiting time when getting into the resort since they manage the number of people inside the resort. The resort also has a restaurant that offers good food. But expect service to take time especially during peak hours.
 
Bad-as Peak
 
Bad-as Peak is the highest peak in the island of Limasawa. It offers a panoramic view of the poblacion and the southern tip of the island. It is a popular spot to end the day among travelers and locals because it offers the best view of Limasawa’s sunset. The adjacent peak of Totoy-Totoy is also an alternative sunset spot on the island.

Unfortunately, we were not able to catch the sunset in Limasawa since cloud covers obscured the view. Our guide said that these cloud covers indicate that the habagat season is set to come in. We came in ahead of the crowd so we got to enjoy the unobstructed view of the coastline of Limasawa. Again, expect the crowds during the late afternoons since it is a popular spot in Limasawa. 
 
Limasawa Municipal Hall and Baywalk
 
On the southern end of the island, you will find the modest Limasawa Municipal Hall. It serves as the center of governance and service of the island-municipality. Tucked within the compound is the Limasawa Quincentennial Historical Marker of Magellan’s voyage around the world. It indicates that Magellan stepped on the island during his voyage. The marker is a reminder of Limasawa’s historical significance in both Philippine and world history.

In front of the government center is the Limasawa Baywalk. It is a small strip by the beach that was developed as a a baywalk that gives you a beautiful view of the Triana coastline and the Bohol Sea. This is where you will also find Limasawa Island Marker. This spot is often overlooked by tourists so you get to enjoy the spot without the usual crowd. At the base of the marker are the footprint marks of outstanding locals of the island.

The Limasawa Baywalk is also a good spot to catch the sunset.
The spot is also a good spot to watch the sunset. There is a small beach strip adjacent to the area where you can enjoy the sea breeze while waiting for the sun to set. Its rugged coast emerge during low tide and locals go about their routine of finding shellfish in the area. I enjoyed the spot watching the sunset even with the cloud cover. I enjoyed the dramatic play of sunset colors on the rugged coast of Limasawa. Definitely, a perfect spot to end my Limasawa visit.

Limasawa Island was a perfect birthday trip and introduction to my 72nd province in my #GOT82PH project. The island fuses history and natural beauty in one perfect travel adventure. It was laidback, rustic, and homey. I enjoyed how it slowed me down to enjoy the day go by. It made a huge impression on me that I must say that every Filipino needs to see… ang ganda ng Limasawa!

There are a thousand islands to discover in the Philippines. Every island has its own story and beauty to explore and enjoy. Some islands are easy to access with just a plane and/or boat ride away. The strip is not a white sand shoreline, like what most people look for, but the rustic vibe it evoked caught my attention. I had to experience it for myself so I went out to check kung bongga nga ba ang Sibonga!

Just two hours away from the city of Cebu, Sibonga is a small and quaint municipality that is popular as a pilgrimage site Local stories share that the name Sibonga was derived from the name of betel nut palm trees that once grew abundant in the town. It was established as a separate town and parish in 1830. Beyond the faith, the town has pockets of attractions that give you a glimpse of its history and the laidback vibe of its community.
 
Nuestra Señora del Pilar Church (Sibonga Church)
 
At the heart of the town is the Nuestra Senora del Pilar Church, more popularly called as Sibonga Church. This Spanish-period church and its convent will catch your attention as you breeze through the town since it is right along the highway. The church was originally a visita under Carcar until its was declared an independent church in 1830. The church honors the Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Zaragoza as its patron saint.

The present structure started construction in 1866, under the neo-gothic architecture. It was in 1898 that the stone church was finally completed. Interestingly the adjacent church convent stands older than the church, having been built in 1839. Built from coral stones, the church convent was designed by Bishop Maranon of Cebu. Both structures remain to be a strong remembrance of Spanish rule in Sibonga.

The church convent is currently being rehabilitated.
The church interior is simple and elegant. The altar is the centerpoint of the church where the image of the Nuestra Senora del Pilar was mounted. The coral stone and pillars of its nave are well-preserved and intact. Just like other churches in Visayas, the ceiling murals are a real beauty. These biblical ceiling paintings were done by Cebu artist, Raymundo Francia, and was completed in 1924.
 
Sibonga Heritage Park
 
The Sibonga Heritage Park is a wide open-space park located near the church. The space offers a chill out space for locals and guests who just want to relax and enjoy the day or the moment pass. The large and old trees along the plaza offer a quick relief from the heat with its shade and the cool sea breeze.

The park is just across the Sibonga Church.
The plaza is complete with benches and canopies where you can just sit back and enjoy watching what is happening around the town. It is surrounded by structures that date back to the different time periods of Sibonga. It gives you a glimpse of the town’s colorful past. Sitting on a bench and just watching gave me a nostalgic feel of that old town vibe.
 
Sibonga Municipal Hall and Plaza
 
Just a stone throw away from the Sibonga Heritage Park is the Sibonga Municipal Plaza. In contrast to the former, the sprawling park is manicured with cemented pathways and manicured gardens. A monument of Dr. Jose Rizal stands as the centerpiece of the park. The park is best visited during the early mornings or late afternoon because it has less tree covers and offers very little shade cover during the day.

The Sibonga Municipal Hall at the far end of the plaza.
At the far end of the plaza stands the Sibonga Municipal Hall. The center of governance of the town was built in American-period architecture. In front of the building is a statue of the Late President Ramon Magsaysay with the inscription of being the “Champion of the Poor”. I guess President Magsaysay has a strong connection with the people of the Sibonga. Behind the Municipal Hall is the Sibonga Wharf that offers a panoramic view of the town and the Cebu Strait.
 
Balai Ortiz and Heritage Cafe
 
Just a few meters walk from the town center, I came across an ancestral house where the first floor was converted into a cafe - the Balai Heritage Cafe. It caught my attention because of its American-style architecture. Interestingly, one of the residents was one of the individuals who had a first-hand account of the death of Former President Ramon Magsaysay. This quaint home was the ancestral home of the Ortiz Family of Sibonga.

The Ortiz Ancestral House is now a museum and a cafe in Sibonga.
The first floor of the house was converted into a cafe that offers meals and snacks. It also has common areas where guests can enjoy group and board games while waiting for their orders. The cafe is neatly designed to be homey with artworks displayed along its walls. I really enjoyed the crispy dinuguan that I ordered - a must try.

The museum is a repository of the family's heirloom.
The second floor serves as the museum that displays the heirloom of the Ortiz Family. You get a glimpse of their simple life in Sibonga as you walk through the house. Antique objects and photographs owned by the family are on display around the house. There were also news clippings on the death of President Magsaysay were also mounted on the wall. As it turns out, Mr. Mario Ortiz, was one of the first responders to the crash site of the late president in Mount Manunggal.
 
Monastery of the Holy Eucharist (Simala Shrine)
 
At the center of the faith in Sibonga is the Monastery of the Holy Eucharist, which also known as the Simala Shrine or the Our Lady of Lindogon Shrine. This pilgrimage church was built on 1998 by the Marian Monks of Eucharistic Adoration from Pampanga. What makes its stand out is its castle-like structure that was built along the hills of Sibonga. The construction of the church was part of the vision of Ingko Niyong Villamayor who believed that the hills of Lindogon would be holy once the image is enshrined in the area.

The Simala Shrine is both a pilgrimage and tourist attraction in Sibonga.
What will strike you the most when you visit this pilgrimage church is how the monastery was built. It is massive and grand with its castle-like architectural design. The structure was built along the hills following the contours of the land it sits on. Towers jut out on the corners of its walkways. A manicured courtyard stands in the middle of its structure. Its main church stands in the background of its courtyard. The church is still undergoing construction with its expansion.

The main church has an elaborately designed nave that glows in gold. The altar has the Holy Eucharist as its centrepiece  and above it is the image of the Our Lady of Lindogon that is believed to be miraculous. Many devotees line up just to touch the image and offer their petitions. Devotees of the Virgin Mary claim that the image provided healing to those who were afflicted with dengue outbreak in the area in 1998. The image is also believed to have shed tears in 4 different occasions. The monastery is a pilgrimage site so one needs to dress properly when entering the shrine.
 
Old Simala Railway Station
 
Tucked in a small corner of the Simala Elementary School is a small building that was once part of a railway system in Cebu. Yes… you heard it right that Cebu had a railway system that run from Argao, in the south, to Danao, up north. It had 14 stations that spanned 57 miles across the island. Unfortunately, the railway system
fell victim to World War 2 bombings and only a few structures remain standing today.

The small railway station in Sibonga is one of the few reminders of the train station. However, you won’t see any historical markers that would indicate the history of the said spot. It was repurposed by the school as a storage room, although, I have read that it was turned into a library. It would be nice though if the provincial and/or local government could put a marker that would highlight the historical value of the place.
 
Aroma Beach
 
Hidden behind the mangrove covers of Sibonga, Aroma Beach is a small beach cove that has been popular among locals for years. Its brown-colored sandy coast is a great way to enjoy a quick beach fix in Sibonga. The cove is just a few meters walk from the highway through a tree-lined rough road. This beach spot is a great way to watch how locals enjoy a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Aroma Beach is a public beach and a no-frills beach spot. As soon as you reach the cove, you will notice its tree-lined shore. There are no huts for rent so you get to find your own corner along the cove. If you have a hammock with you, you can prop it up between the trees. Locals bring their own mats or tents to set up. I came in with just my bag so I just found my spot under the cover of one of its trees.

Since it is a no-frills beach spot, expect to enjoy a chill lowkey experience. You can explore the mangrove covers on both ends of the cove or wade through its waters. There are no basic facilities in the area - no showers and no toilets. There are ruins of a house in the area that you can use to change clothes but that is just it. I just hope that the LGU can take the lead to secure and tidy-up Aroma Beach because its raw beauty gets spoiled with garbage left by beachgoers and broken bottles in the area.

POST TRAVEL NOTES
More than just a pilgrimage site, the town of Sibonga has pockets of interesting sites that give you a glimpse of its beauty and colorful past. Exploring the poblacion gave me the thrill on its history with its well-preserved structures, that date back to the different time periods of the country. Its no-frillls attractions and beach spots assures you that life is simple and you just need to pause and breathe in its beauty. Sibonga does teach you a lot about faith and life.

Our next stop is a destination made from legends and folklore.
More often than not, a lot of travelers keep their eyes on the hot items on their tourism checklist. We are often excited checkout the more popular spots or the social media savvy ones. But if we take a pause to stop briefly and just explore more, you will be surprised to discover how colorful a destination that you just usually pass through. Try it… just explore one destination along the way.

Getting there: There are daily flights to the Mactan-Cebu International Airport from major local and international airports. You can take a cab or a TNVS ride to the Cebu South Bus Terminal. Alternatively, you can take a bus to SM City Cebu then a jeepney ride to the Cebu South Bus Terminal.
 
You can purchase a Ceres Bus ticket for Sibonga. Buses bound for Argao and Oslob pass through Sibonga. Just ask the driver to drop you off at the Poblacion.

It does not have the usual white sand coasts of the popular destinations found in northern Cebu. In fact, its coastline’s been catching attention for its rocky coast. The perfect mix of chill and rugged vibe of Catmon lets your mind flow deep in its meow-sings (musings).

Exploring another off-beat spot in Cebu.
Just two hours away from the city, Catmon is a small town that travelers usually just pass through when they are headed to the more popular North Cebu destinations. The name of the town was derived from the huge trees, katmon, that thrive in the area. It was under the Spanish rule that it was founded as a municipality to which it has kept its status until today. Social media users have taken interest with the town, highlighting its rugged coastline and cliff spots facing the Camotes Sea.
 
San Guillermo Parish Church (Catmon Church)
 
The San Guillermo Parish Church was initially a mission station of the Augustinian Recollects, under the Danao Church. It was then declared a separate visita in 1835. Situated atop a hill, the site where the church stands was the third and final choice for its location and overlooks the town center and the Camotes Sea. The present structure was completed in 1875 and is one of the oldest churches in the province and in the country

The San Guillermo Parish Church is one of the oldest churches in the province.
Built from coral stones, the facade of the church was designed with a triangular roof entryway structure. It is highlighted by arched windows with the central arch window depicting an image of the Holy Eucharist. The facade was completed in 1875. A three-story belfry flanks the church with its hexagonal shaped upper floors, highlighted with arched windows. The belfry is capped with a dome. The belfry and the facade were undergoing rehabilitation after it was damaged by the Bogo Earthquake last year.

The modern-design altar is an eye-catcher.
The interior was a fusion of modern and past architecture. A large part of its old walls remain intact. These wall foundations were built in 1868. A portion of the church’s interior were made in concrete. Its altar is modern in design with the image of the Crucified Christ as its centerpiece. A side niche bears the image of the town’s patron saint, St. William the Hermit.
 
Tinubdan Falls
 
Tucked in the hinterlands of Catmon is a waterfall attraction that was once a popular attraction among locals and tourists. Tinubdan Falls is a multi-cascade waterfalls in Catmon. A 45-minute habal-habal ride will get you to the jump-off point. From the jump-off point, a 20-minute hike along a dirt trail will get you to the first level of Tinubdan’s cascade.

Tinubdan Falls lie along the forested area of Catmon. Its water cascades in two levels. The top level has a single cascade where water falls from a height of about 4 feet into a small base pool. Boulders dot the surroundings of the base pool. The water then flows further down into multiple cascades along a rock face of the second level into multiple base pools. The beauty of the waterfalls is best seen at the base second level, however, access restrictions in the area did not give us the privilege to see the beauty of its downstream cascade.

The waterfall was closed due to an accident.
A tragic accident in 2021, that claimed the lives of 3 locals, was the reason for the closure of Tinubdan Falls. Our guide, Kuya Jonard, shared with us that the waters can easily go torrential within minutes since the water flows from the mountains in Cebu. Sadly, the setback has kept the beauty of Tinubdan Falls away from the tourism spotlight. I hope that the LGU can help in making access and appreciation of Tinubdan Falls safer for the benefit of the community and its locals.
 
Esoy Hot Spring
 
Esoy Hot Spring is another popular attraction in Catmon. Nestled along a gorge, the resort has a collection of pools that collect natural sulphur-rich hot spring water for a relaxing and therapeutic dip. It is one of the two natural thermal pools that you can find the province of Cebu. It is a private resort and setting an appointment is encouraged, although, we were lucky that we were able to walk-in during the visit.

You would have to navigate through a steep cemented pathway down to the receiving area of the hot spring resort. The resort fees give you access to the thermal pools in the area. There are small pools in the area and a big one on the lower level of the resort. A crevice on the rock face of the ravine serves as the main source of its hot spring water.
 
Ka-Tinggo Falls
 
Apart from the hot springs, Esoy Hot Spring also offers access to Ka-Tinggo Falls. This waterfall attraction is located along the headwaters of the river that flows below the resort. You can get a full package at the resort that will give you access to the falls and to the resort.

The adventure to Ka-Tinggo Falls starts with crossing the rickety hanging bridge to the other side of the ridge. From here, it will take about a 30-minute hike to the base pool of the falls. The trail runs along the riverbed and will have you clambering over rocks and crossing the river. The last stretch of the “trail” is swimming against the water flow of its base pool.

Ka-Tinggo Falls is a strong single cascade between two rock face of the gorge. Water cascades into a very deep aquamarine pool. Getting close to the cascade is a challenge because of its strong water current. We enjoyed the cold dip at the base pool while enjoying the sights and sounds of the falls. We also got to enjoy the view of the gorge as we floated downstream back to the resort.
 
Catmon Coast
 
Catmon does not have the usual stretch of white sand coast. Its coast is mostly rocky and cliffs, with small pockets of sandy coast. Resorts, situated along the rocky cliffs, have started to get traction from motorcycle riders and tourists for the views and the extra adrenaline rush when they dive into the blue waters of the sea from the cliffs.

We were able to enjoy the chill laidback vibe of its rocky coast in one of the roadside resorts along the highway. The coast was mostly rock floor base and void of sandy shorelines. We enjoyed the laidback chill vibe of this coastal town.  Catmon is a great spot to enjoy a quick beach break from the urban buzz of Cebu.

Catmon is a laidback town that is an easy alternative for a weekend break when you find yourself in Cebu. Whether you want to relax by the beach or enjoy a hot dip, it can give you that relaxing breather after a week of urban hustle or exploring around the province. It can also give you that adrenaline rush as you get to experience the more rustic and sublime side of Cebu.

Fusing fitness and heritage on our next travel.
It is exciting that apart from off-beat travelers, we now have riders who put the spotlight on destinations that, more often than not, do not get noticed. These riders, mainly due to the convenience of their motorcycles, are able to venture deeper into destinations that would eventually lead to the discovery of the local’s hidden spots. It is great to see that as we discover more, we are able to open new opportunities for the locals and the communities.

Its old Spanish town vibe and flavorful pork broth has placed it in the tourism map of this city and the country. Its Spanish-period plaza is always on the itinerary of guests visiting. But a closer exploration into its nooks and crannies would show you that its stories transcend through different periods of Philippine history, and that, there’s more to the prayers and broth of Iloilo’s district of Molo.

Revisiting the old town charm of the District of Molo in Iloilo.
Originally referred to as the Parian district of Iloilo, Molo used to be a separate town of the province until it was absorbed as a district of the city in 1937. It used to be a settlement of Chinese traders who provided trade services to the Spaniards and Mexicans residing in the adjacent town, and now district, of Arevalo. It flourished, not only in wealth, but also on intellectual prominence during the 1800s hence the monicker of being the “Athens of the Philippines”. At present, the district’s Spanish-period plaza continues to be one of the prominent tourism icons in the city.
 
Molo Church
 
At the heart of the district’s tourism and pilgrimage map is the Spanish-period Santa Ana Parish Church, more popularly known as Molo Church. Completed in 1888, the church features a Neo-Gothic architectural style. Its two bell towers, with its spires and pointed arches, stands dominantly along the skyline of the district. Its age-old beauty is hard to miss since the church is a central part of Molo.

At the heart of the district is the feminist church - Santa Ana Parish Church.
The Molo Church stands differently because of the 16 female saints that line the pillars of its nave. Dedicated to Molo’s Patron Saint, Santa Ana, her image is the centerpiece of its beautiful Neo-Gothic retablo. It is referred to as a feminist church because of this feature. The church was also popular before for its beautiful Biblical paintings that Dr. Jose Rizal, our National Hero, made a quick visit to Molo Church just to admire these art pieces. However, these artworks can no longer be seen in the church.

Molo Church became a refuge of Filipinos during World War 2. We can say that the church is a mute witness to the colorful history of this city. The National Historical Institute declared it as a national landmark in 1992. Molo Church is also the only Gothic church outside of Metro Manila.
 
Convento de Molo
 
The Convento de Molo is another heritage structure that sits adjacent to the church. Contrary to the usual assumption, the house is older than the church and was not built as a convent. The structure , built in the bahay-na-bato architecture, was originally the house of Pablo Araneta Y Soriano, a nationalist and revolutionary hero. He was one of the Ilonggo elites who formed the Comite Conspirador who mobilized revolutionaries against the Spanish forces. This would explain why the house bears the NHI Marker honoring Pablo Araneta.

The Convento de Molo was originally the home of local hero, Pablo Araneta.
From the headquarters of the revolutionary forces, the house was later converted to the Convento de Molo. The convent would house the administrative office of the Molo Church. The structure was restored to its former glory and is one of the prominent structures at the district plaza of Molo. It sits right along the highway and could easily catch your attention for its architecture as it stands different from the ancestral houses in the area. It is void of the usual grand architecture of the houses that is common in the Iloilo.
 
Molo Plaza
 
Similar to most Spanish-period towns in the region, the Molo Plaza is a large open park at the heart of the district of Molo. The design is Greek inspired, immortailizing Molo’s monicker as the “Athens of the Philippines”. The most iconic feature of the plaza is its sculpture rendition of the life-size images of the Greek goddesses Aphrodite, Athena, Artemis, Demeter, Hera, and Hestia. These images complement the female saints of Molo Church. These Greek Goddesses and the Molo Church are the iconic images of Molo’s tourism.

Locals and guests can enjoy a lazy afternoon at the plaza with a game of chess.
The park also features a sculpture rendition of Maria Clara, opposite the images of the godesses. Interestingly, a sculpture of Pura Kalaw was also installed to honor the first Filipina Title Holder of the “Queen of the Orient”. The park comes alive in the early mornings and late afternoons where locals enjoy the cool afternoons of the park. You get to see locals sell their home-made delicacies or you can challenge locals for a game of chess while enjoying the cool breeze of the Molo Plaza. Late afternoons are the best time to capture great pictures of the Molo Church and Plaza with the sunset colors giving extra drama to the old charm beauty of the church and the plaza.
 
Molo Mansion
 
The Yusay-Consing Ancestral House, more popularly known as Molo Mansion, is probably the most popular and most photographed mansion in the province. The house was completed in 1926 and featured a Neoclassical-art deco architecture. It was originally called the Lacson-Yusay Ancestral House after the original owners of the house - the couple Dona Petra Lacson and Estanislao Yulo Yusay. The two-story house exuded an air of grand elegance with its intricate exterior design, complete with a fountain along its driveway. Its azotea or balcony offers an amazing view of the Molo Church.

The Molo Mansion is the most popular ancestral homes in the District of Molo.
The house was later on inherited by the daughter, Rosario Yusay, and her husband Timoteo Consing, Sr. It was renamed to the Yusay-Consing Ancestral House. The house was later sold to the SM Group in 2014 which prompted fears and reactions that it might be demolished. The Molo Mansion is an example of adaptive reuse where the original structure was kept in its stately form. The mansion now houses a souvenir shop and a part of its courtyard was converted into a cafe area for guests and visitors.
 
Rosendo Mejica Historical Landmark and Museum
 
Hidden along the busy streets of Molo is a modest home where an influential Ilonggo was born - Rosendo Mejica. He was the first certified public accountant from the province, established the first public school building in Iloilo, and founded the longest-running Hiligaynon newspaper, Makinaugalingon. He has devoted 30 years of his life in public service that paved the way to the construction of the Molo Boulevard and the Old City Hall. His contributions has been recognized by the National Historical Institute with a marker installed in his birthplace.
The modest two-story house sits along Locsin Street. The house is well-kept and his legacy lives on with a museum that was dedicated to him. Unfortunately, I was not able to check out the museum at the time of my visit. Although the house seemed well-kept, I think that it needs to be given extra attention for its cultural and historical value. It was good that I was able to research on it and that pushed me to check it out.
 
New Carpenter’s Bridge
 
New Carpenter’s Bridge is one of the 7 bridges under the tourism program of Iloilo’s 7 Bridges of Blessing. The bridge was named after the first civilian governor of the Moro Province, Frank Watson Carpenter. He was responsible for the implementation of the budget system in the 1907 insular government.

The bridge is referred to as the Bridge of Love. It is a 114.80-meter bridge spanning the Iloilo River and connects the districts of Molo and Mandurriao. It is also part of the beautiful Iloilo Esplanade that runs along the length of the Iloilo River.
 
Molo Cemetery
 
My biggest find when I explored Molo was the Molo Cemetery. It was one of the few cemeteries that is art-deco themed. It captured my attention after seeing their collection of massive art-deco mausoleums when I was heading back to my hotel. So I returned the next day to explore this unique cemetery.

The Simborio is a huge solid structure under the art-deco design. It is massive.
The entrance of the cemetery stands unique with its Egyptian-styled portal. It is believed that the style is the only one in the country. At the end of its walkway is an art-deco simborio with a massive tower entrance. The solid structure bears the word “Memoriam”. The cemetery has a wide collection of art-deco mausoleums that add character to the cemetery. The Molo Cemetery was a good find for someone like me who finds dark tourism interesting.
 
Snack Find: Molo Soup
 
Molo Soup is a pork-based soup that is simple and savory. Its history can be traced from the early Chinese residents of Molo, which was then called Parian. Ground pork is wrapped in molo wrappers and boiled in a water with sautéed garlic and topped with green onions. The soup is rich and savory.

One of the best places to enjoy this soup is at the Panaderia de Molo. The “panaderia” is easy to find since it is situated along the main highway of Molo. The bakery also has baked goodies that go well with this popular soup. Sipping the broth that originated in Molo is a great way to end a day of exploring this homey town.

POST TRAVEL NOTES
A closer look at Molo has given me a different appreciation of this district in Iloilo City. Don’t get me wrong, the Molo Plaza Complex continues to amaze me. Only this time, I got to see beyond the faith and soup of Molo. Exploring its streets was like walking into the different decades of Molo, from its Spanish influences to the present. The town was like a time-capsule of sorts that give you a glimpse of its glorious past.

Get ready to explore another off beat town in Cebu. Where are we heading next?
Often times, we get immersed with the usual popular spots when we visit places. But a little effort to take a few more steps or to be a bit more curious could yield to new experiences and information that’s been there all along. It is just that we have been too occupied with what we are used to that we don’t notice the rest. Just stay curious when you travel and be surprised.
 
Getting there: There are regular flights to Iloilo from major hubs in the country and in some select international stations. From the airport, you can take a van to SM City Iloilo. You can then take  the airconditioned mini-buses with the Molo or Muhon sign. Ask the conductor/driver to drop you off at the Molo Plaza.

The mere mention of its name often invokes fear. I have long planned out exploring the place but I always found a reason not to because of its notorious image. A new travel project centered on Andres Bonifacio has pushed me to explore the birthplace of a certified Batang Tondo.

It is interesting to note that Tondo once existed as a huge kingdom. It was a territory mentioned in the Laguna Copperplate Inscription, the earliest legal document in the country. Its territory once covered the areas of Pampanga, Bulacan, and Rizal. Beyond the breadth of its old territory, Tondo played a pivotal role in Philippine history. We could say that history is tucked along the streets of the district.
 
Andres Bonifacio Birthplace Monument*
 
Standing along the busy streets of Divisoria, the monument of Andres Bonifacio towers along Recto Avenue. The statue, crouched with a pen and paper on his hands, honors the Tondo-born hero for his role in the Philippine Revolution. Andres was born in Tondo on November 30, 1883 and spent a large part of his youth in
the district. Despite experiencing the hardship of life, Andres was a self-educated person who loved reading and theater. He went on to establish the Kataastaasan,  Kagalanggalangan Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan, the organization that was pivotal in the Philippine Revolution.

The statue of Andres Bonifacio is full of symbolism. The pen and paper was in reference to him signing his Katipunan oath with his blood. The flag raised behind him is the symbolism for the Katipunan, an organization that he founded that sought freedom against Spanish Rule. The bolo was in reference to his activism and fight for freedom. He was a hero that came from the masses and, even to this day, he is often referred to as the “Father of the Philippine Revolution”.
 
Tutuban Train Station/Tutuban Center Mall
 
Just behind the Andres Bonifacio Monument is the Tutuban Train Station. This imposing structure was the once the center of transportation in Manila. It was part of the Manila-Dagupan Line of the Manila Railway Company, a train line that connected Manila to the Pangasinan. The train line was 195 kilometers long. The Tutuban Train Station served as the main transit hub of commuters.

The main station was converted into a mall in 1994 - the Tutuban Center Mall. This paved the way for commerce and public interest in the area to gain traction. You still get to see the iron-work pillars of the old railway station inside the mall. With the development of the North-South Commuter Railway, this area will once again become a transit point for commuters and travelers. It will be a vital connection between the north and the south of Luzon.

The Tutuban Train Station/Tutuban Center Mall becomes more vibrant during the Christmas season when bazaars open around the area. The commerce around the former train station proves that Tondo remains to be a focal area for commerce in Metro Manila. We cannot disregard that, despite the existence of larger airconditioned malls in the metro, there is a district that continues to be at the center in commerce and transportation.
 
Katipunan Foundation Site*
 
Further down Recto Avenue, a small monument sits silently behind the usual chatter of business in Tondo. The site, marked by a tableau of empowered Filipinos and a national historical marker, is the site where the Kataastaasan, Kagalanggalangan Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan was established by Andres Bonifacio. The organization was pivotal during the Philippine Revolution in 1898. The organization was formed in 1892 by nationalists Deodato Arellano, Teodoro Plata, Valentin Diaz, Ladislao Diwa, Jose Dizon, and Andres Bonifacio.

The KKK Memorial stands quietly in the middle of the busy street of Recto.
The Katipunan was a secret organization whose main objective was to seek freedom for Filipinos from the hands of the Spanish governance through an armed revolution. Its discovery in August 1896 hastened the Philippine Revolution. It led to the “Cry of Pugad Lawin” where Katipuneros tore their cedulas to show their resistance against Spanish rule. This movement led to a full blown revolution in 1898.
 
Plaza Liga Filipina*
 
Tucked along one of the corners of the busy market street of Ilaya is a silent witness to the early stages of the aim for Philippine Independence. The Plaza La Liga is a small plaza where the house of Doroteo Ongjungco once stood. It was on this site where Dr. Jose Rizal founded the La Liga Filipina together with Apolinario Mabini, Ambrosio Rianzanes Bautista, and Andres Bonifacio. The organization was directed towards nationhood and how Filipinos can become better citizens. Unfortunately three days after its founding, Dr. Jose Rizal was arrested and exiled in Dapitan.

On this site, the La Liga Filipina was founded by Dr. Jose Rizal upon his return to the Philippines.
A monument with a bust of Dr. Jose Rizal stand at the center of the plaza. A bronze plate bears the narrative behind the founding of the La Liga Filipina. The backdrop of the plaza outlines the “Ang Pitong Asal” - the mandate of the members of the organization. A National Historical Institute Marker was also installed in the area as recognition of the site’s historical value. It is interesting that, in the midst of the market buzz and kids laughter while playing in the plaza, the independence that we enjoy today started here.
 
Minor Basilica and Archdiocesan Shrine Parish of Sto. Nino de Tondo*
 
At the center of Tondo is the Minor Basilica and Archdiocesan of Santo Nino de Tondo, or more commonly referred to as Tondo Church. The church is home to the second oldest Santo Nino image in the country. Just like Cebu, the streets burst in lively celebration every 3rd Sunday of January in honor of the Santo Nino, albeit in a different fashion. Andres Bonifacio was baptized at the church on December 2, 1863.

The Tondo Church stand as the center of the Catholic faith in Tondo.
The Tondo Church was one of the first churches established in Luzon by the Spaniards. Consecrated in 1572, the stone church was completed in 1695. Its neoclassical architectural style, with its imposing church belfries stand out of the Tondo landscape. The facade is simple with two niches bearing the images of the Risen Christ and the Virgin Mary.

It is home to the 2nd oldest image of the Santo Nino in the Philippines.
The interior of the church is grand with its painted ceilings and pillars. The altar catches your attention with its intricate paintings and carvings. At the center of its interior is the ivory image of the Santo Nino de Tondo that came from Acapulco, Mexico. The Tondo Church was raised as a Basilica Minore in November 2025 by Pope Leo XIV.
 
Plaza Hernandez
 
The Plaza Hernandez is a public space right in front of the Tondo Church. Originally called Plaza Leon, it was renamed to Plaza Hernandez in 1970 in honor of Tondo’s literary genius, Ka Amado Hernandez. Ka Amado was known as a writer and labor leader and he was imprisoned for his alleged association with the communist movement. It was during his imprisonment that he wrote some of his notable works like “Isang Dipang Langit” and “Bayang Malaya”. He was later released and acquitted of the allegations.

Plaza Hernandez is an open-space plaza that honors Amado Hernandez, a Tondo-born literary artist.
The Plaza Hernandez has a facade that bears a sculpture of Ka Amado and his “Panata sa Kalayaan”. His words “Kitlin man ang buhay ko’t biyakin ang bungo. Sa bungo ko’y nakalimbag pa rin sa sariwang dugo. Pilipino akong sa pambubusabos ay hindi susuko.” seems to resonate until today. A historical marker was also installed honoring the literary artist for his literary works. Amado Hernandez remains an honored “batang Tondo” to this day.
 
Plaza Morga / Macario Sakay Monument 
 
Surrounded by bamboo greens, Plaza Morga is an open-space park that offers a nature refuge at the heart of Tondo. The park gave me a cool break from the humid heat of downtown Manila. The park was named in honor of Antonio de Morga, a Spanish lawyer who once served as a Deputy Governor General of the country. Interestingly, the park does not have any bust or monument that honors him.

But at the center of this small park stands a monument that honors Macario Sakay. Macario Sakay is a Philippine Revolutionary General who was born in Tondo. He sought independence from both the Spanish and American rule. He declared the Tagalog Republic where he was President after the capture of General Emilio Aguinaldo. He was later captured and executed by hanging in 1907 after his deceitful capture by the American forces.
 
Plaza Moriones 
 
At the heart of Tondo’s activity is a linear park that runs along Moriones Street. The Plaza Moriones is a mute witness to the political activity in Tondo. From uprisings against Spanish forces to establishment of working-class movements, the plaza has seen part of Philippine history unfold. The calm and refreshing surroundings of the park under the afternoon sun was a complete contrast to the fury of Filipinos that made its mark on this site.

At the other end of the plaza is another monument honoring the heroism of Honorio Lopez.
This green oasis in Tondo was named after Governor Domingo Moriones who was the person responsible for the construction of the sewerage system in Manila. A historical marker was installed at one end of the park to honor the valiant Muslim locals from Hagonoy at Macabebe to ward off the Spanish of Legaspi in 1571. This was known as the Battle of Bangkusay. On the other end of Plaza Moriones is a monument and a historical marker that honors Honorio Lopez - a revolutionary who fought during the Philippine Revolution and the Philippine-American War.
Plaza Moriones played a significant role in Philippine history. The well-kept tree-lined park offers a quiet sanctuary to local residents. In the same way, it has also been a sanctuary of freedom for Filipinos as it remains to be one of the five freedom parks of Manila. Plaza Moriones remains to be the true heart of Tondo.
 
Snack Break: Liberty Food Mart and Kapihan ni Kabisi
 
Exploring Tondo will not be complete if you don’t swing by the Liberty Food Mart for a quick snack break. Established in 1923, the bakery/cafe is a staple in the Tondo food scene. What started out as a bakery selling pan de sal, it has now grown to offer different bread products and a cafe alongside the bakery. Interestingly, it remained in the same location since it opened.

The Kapihan ni Kabisi is a small cafe that offers bread, rice meals, and drinks for those who wish to dine in. “Kabisi” is in reference to Ah Nam, an immigrant from China, who acquired the bakery in 1954. He was often referred to as “kabisi” or store owner by the locals. From baking breads to serving meals, we can say that Liberty Food Mart is part of the history and heritage of Tondo.
 

POST TRAVEL NOTES
What started out with hesitation and fear turned out to be an interesting exploration of a district that is significant to Philippine history. True to the perception of being a place of the masses, history has shown that Tondo has always been rooted to the common Filipino even until to this day. I must admit that I have only seen the history of the district and there is so much more to see. One lesson that Tondo will always echo in me is that the first step to doing something is to first face the fear. You will be surprised at what you can discover after that obstacle.

​Getting there: The district of Tondo is in downtown Manila. The closest train stations are Recto Station (LRT 2) and Doroteo Jose (LRT 1). From Recto Station, you can take a jeep with the Divisoria sign and asked to be dropped off at Tutuban Center Mall. If you are coming from Doroteo Jose, you can a trike to Tutuban Center Mall. You can use Google Maps to navigate to these spots by foot.

While often overshadowed by the shores of Moalboal and the excited shrieks of Badian, this small town has managed to keep its grip steady in attracting local and international tourists to its shores, falls, and stories.  The provincial vibe of the town, its natural beauty, and the structures that bring you back to the past give you that unique vibe that captures your heart like another Juan in the town of Samboan.

Exploring another southie town in Cebu.
The town of Samboan was once a large town, historically known as Canamucan, that stretches out to include the present-day towns of Ginatilan, Malabuyoc, and Alegria. The name was later changed to “Samboan” and was believed to be derived from the local word “sinamboang”, a local method of fishing during the Spanish period. This town, whose center is located atop a hill, is a popular side trip by tourist who frequent the more popular Moalboal and Badian. Its main tourism draw are the waterfall attractions that make guests fall in love with Samboan.
 
Aguinid Falls 
 
I started my day casually and thinking that exploring Aguinid Falls was just the usual trail - huffing it out and getting my feet wet. And boy… I was wrong! My one-and-a-half hour Aguinid Falls adventure got me huffing, scrambling, getting wet, and having a ton of fun from start to finish. The getting wet part was not in my plan but good thing that I was ready.

Aguinid Falls is a waterfall system where the waters of Tangbo River runs along its 8 cascades. With Kuya Drew as my guide, I went all out to traverse all 8 drops. This is the best way to enjoy this waterfall attraction in Sambaon. Just get ready to get wet and physical with this traverse but, rest assured, you get that extra adrenaline early in the morning.
We started our traverse from the base of the falls. The trail of the first 5 levels is relatively easy. Expect to get really wet along the trail. You will be wading in cold waters and clambering head on to cascades. The first level was a wide drop from a height of about 7 feet into a deep basin. You can already take a quick and cold dip to cool you down. Level 2 gets your adrenaline up as you climb up the rock where cold waters run down. The rocks are not slippery and crevices on its rock face make it easy to get up to the top of the cascade. The 3rd cascade was a wide drop from about 7 feet - one side into a deep basin and the other half on a rock face.

I enjoyed the 4th cascade where I drenched myself under its cascade before clambering up its rock face. It was an easy hike through the 5th level. You will get drenched as you clamber across the cascade of the 6th cascade before you navigate up its tight passage to the top. Your guide will help you navigate the challenge of its narrow pass. Cascade number 7 would challenge you with climbing up its under the cascade of its waters. Cascade 8 is an easy homerun as you walk along its terrace-like cascade.

You need to traverse the width of the 5th cascade.
The Aguinid Waterfalls experience was a huge surprise but I had so much doing the traverse. I did not expect to get soaking wet in its cold waters. I did not get to notice all the physical exertions clambering up its rocks and cascades because of Aguinid’s waters cools you down. Now I understand why tourist make the side trip to Aguinid Falls.

Bonbon-Binalayan Hidden Falls
 
Tucked along the boundary of barangays Bonbon and Binalayan, Bonbon-Binalayan Hidden Falls is an attraction that is often skipped by tourists. The waterfalls can be reached after a short and easy 15-minute walk from the jump-off point along the highway. A guide is needed to explore the waterfalls for the safety of guests.

The Bonbon-Binalayan Hidden Falls is a two-cascade waterfalls. You can view the beauty of the first cascade from the trail downstream. The first cascade stands beautifully as a wide single cascade of about 10 feet into a deep wading pool. You can jump from the top of the cascade into the basin. A cemented trail leads up to the top of the pool and the first cascade.

The first cascade stands majestically tall with water cascading from a height of 50 feet. It stands differently as water seen to cascade in three strands. The rock face is also distinct with its caves. My guide, Kuya Reymond, said that you can climb up the openings and cliff jump into the base pool of this hidden falls. It was nice to see the beauty of the falls without the crowd.

Samboan Town Center
 
Sitting atop a hill, the town center of Samboan follows the usual Spanish-period towns where governance, religion, and business is located at the heart of town. The town has a small rotunda that stands as a small memorial for World War II volunteers. The monument/waiting shed honors locals who provided food and assistance to help sustain the resistance.

The Sambaon Municipal Hall is also located within the town center. It is the center of governance of the town. The old municipal building was converted to the Museo de Sambaon that serves as the repository of the town’s history. The Municipal Gym serves as the venue of the town’s socio-civic activities.
 
St. Michael the Archangel Church (Samboan Church)
 
The Samboan Church is one of the Spanish-period structures that remain standing to this day. The parish was established in 1784 but the present stone church was constructed in 1842. The church was built from coral stones called “salay”. The facade of the church is simple with 4 carved pillars with vase-like designs at the top. A bas relief of the Spanish crown was installed at the top of the church door. The four-story belfry and convent stand adjacent to the church.

The beautifully designed church interior stands in contrast with its simple facade. The beautifully painted church ceilings, by Bohol artists, are eyecatchers. The religious artworks leads your eyes to the two-tier retablo with the images of the Immaculate Conception and St. Michael de Archangel occupying the center niches. The church exudes a safe sanctuary vibe to the faithful and its guests.
 
Campanario de Antigua and Escala de Jacob
 
Located at 200 meters above sea level, the 3-story Camapanario de Antigua is a Spanish-period watchtower made from coral stones. The tower was built in 1878 and offers a panoramic view of the Tanon Strait. The watchtower serves as a lookout to warn locals against Moro Pirates during that time. The tower was restored and now gives locals and guests a panoramic view of the town’s coast and the nearby Negros Island. Unfortunately, I was not able to head up to its topmost level during the time of my visit.

Adjacent to the watch tower is the Escala de Jacob. The staircase was named after the famous bibilical story of Jacob’s dream of a staircase leading to heaven. The 147-step made from coral stones connects the watch tower, church complex, and town center to the coast of Sambaon. It was built in 1878 to allow locals to have easy access to the church during mass celebrations and an easy escape route during moro raids.
 
Aranas Family Beach Resort
 
The Escala de Jacob leads down to a white sand beach strip in Tambol. The beach strip faces the Tanon Strait and offers a panoramic view of the strait and the neighboring island of Negros. The strip is dotted with a number of resorts that offer overnight and daytrip packages. Tourist also have options from camping spots to airconditioned rooms.

I opted to check out Aranas Family Beach Resort. The white sand shorelines, its turquoise and blue waters, and the amazing view of the Negros were perfect for enjoying a quick dose of sun, sand, and sea. The beach was not crowded so I really enjoyed soaking in the beach vibe. Yes, summer came as early as January for me. The resort was a perfect spot to enjoy the beach without the crowd.

Dao Falls
 
From the beach, we capped the day with a visit to the most popular waterfalls in Sambaon - Dao Falls. This attraction is one of the visited spots in town because of its towering cascade of 90-feet. It stands as one of the highest on the south side of Cebu.

My Dao Falls adventure started with a 20-minute habal-habal ride to the jump-off point. After the registration and being assigned a guide, Ate Fely, we started our 20-minute trek to the Dao Falls. The trail was established by the community that runs along the banks of the downstream flow of the falls. You will crossing streams, scrambling over rocks, and walking along the muddy trail carved along the rock walls of the ravine.

But all the huffing is worth it when you see the full view of Dao Falls from the trail. I was lucky that there were only a few guests when I visited. I was able to see the beauty of the falls without the crowd. I got to enjoy an unadulterated view of Dao’s majestic cacscade while enjoying the rhythmic splash of water into its basin. It was a perfect way to end a rustic Sambaon day.

POST TRAVEL NOTE
The town of Samboan is a southie gem for the province of Cebu. It perfectly weaves nature and history into one amazing adventure that leaves its guests in awe. From its majestic drops to its well-preserved historical structures to the adrenaline pumping bouldering against the flow, its sense of adventure is the type that will make you fall in love with Sambaon. This town should not be just a side trip but a destination that deserves its own spot.

There are destinations that usually stay within the shadows of more popular spots when they deserve to be given their own light for their tourism draw. The challenge is rooted on the strong coordination between the community and its local government. Local tourism can provide a sustainable livelihood for its communities. All that they need is understanding what they have and working together to provide a good tourism value proposition to its target market.

​Getting there: Major local and international airlines have direct flights to Cebu. You can take a cab from the airport to the Cebu South Bus Terminal where you can take a bus to Bato via Barili. Ask the teller and driver that you are going to Samboan. Travel time is around 3-4 hours.

It serves as the center of commerce, education, and governance. With an active runway cutting through the town, it gives tourists a preview of how landings and crossings start and end a laidback day in this town. This is Catarman. A town that transcends time and history.

Located on the northern side of the island of Samar, Catarman was a pre-Spanish settlement that had its roots on the mouth of the Catarman River. The settlement, also known as Calatman or Cataruman, was part of Ibabao, one the three divisions established by the Spaniards in the region. Fast forward to the present, the town now serves as the capital and gateway to the province. The town may not compare to other tourist destinations in the province but, with a closer look, you will be surprised with the old town charm of Catarman.
 
Catarman Airport
 
Located at the heart of the town, the Catarman National Airport serves as the gateway to Northern Samar. The 1,600-meter runway can only accommodate turbo-prop aircrafts. It remains active connecting Catarman with Manila and Cebu for domestic travel. Changes in terminal assignments in Manila, though, will now connect the town only to Cebu.

Interestingly, this airport divides the town of Catarman in the middle. I found it interesting that mornings were for planes landing on the airport while afternoons, and when the airport is not in use, it functions as a pedestrian lane for locals moving from one side of the town to other other side. You will be treated with a full view of the runway while crossing it. I have only seen 2 runways with the same mechanism - Loakan Airport in Baguio City and Catarman National Airport. But to date, only this airport remain open for commercial flights.
 
Dalakit Boulevard and Beach
 
Adjacent to the runway of the Catarman National Airport is the Dalakit Boulevard and Beach. The beach is the most accessible beach spot in Catarman. It is just a short tricycle ride from town or, if you are up for a quick morning or afternoon walk from the town center, the beach spot is a good spot to head to. It is a fave spot of locals who head off to the beach strip for a quick dose of sun, sand, and sea.

The gray sand shores was a great day starter when I was in Catarman. The clear skies gave me a clear view of Mount Bulusan and Mount Mayon on the other island. Locals were enjoying a dose of its salty waters. There were small stores that line the boulevard where you can get a snack. The beach was also a good stop for your morning plane-spotting. It gives you a great view of planes making its approach to the Cataraman National Airport.
 
Northern Samar Provincial Capitol
 
Just a few meters away from the airport is the Northern Samar Provincial Capitol. This is the center of governance of the province where most provincial government offices are located. It was only in 1965 that the town was declared the capital of Northern Samar after RA 4221 divided the old Samar Province into Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, and Samar.

Catarman is the center of governance in the Northern Samar.
The imposing two-story building stands in elegance on the northern side of the town. It is the first to greet you as you leave the airport. A statue of Northern Samar local hero, Agustin Sumuroy, stands at the front of the capitol building. Sumuroy started an uprising in Palapag against Spanish forces. Known as the Sumuroy Revolt, the sentiment quickly spread through the province and neighboring islands.
 
Catarman Freedom Park
 
The Catarman Freedom Park is a sprawling park on the south side of Catarman. The open-space park is public space that fuses a touch of nature and community engagement. It is the host of community activities in Catarman.

The park is leisure space at the heart of the town which is a favorite spot of locals to watch the day pass. The huge open spaces are regular venues for students practicing school work routines. The auditorium serves as venues for community events. You can just take a seat in one of the park benches and watch a typical day in Catarman.
 
Our Lady of the Annunciation and Sacred Heart Plaza
 
The Our Lady of the Anunciation Cathedral Parish is the seat of the Diocese of Catarman. The church was first established in 1596 in Palapag. It was  in 1974 that the Catarman Cathedral was built after it became the diocese that oversees the Catholic churches in Northern Samar.

The church stands in its grand baroque design at the heart of the town. Its four-story belfry towers on the right side of the church. The interior is simple with its beautiful three-level retablo as its main centerpiece. It glows elegantly with its gold and turquoise motif. The retablo is adorned with different saints with the image of the Our Lady of the Annuciation occupying the top niche.

The Sacred Heart Plaza is an open-space park of the church.
In front of the Catarman Cathedral is the Sacred Heart Plaza. This open-space park is adorned with images of saints and an image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus as its park centerpiece. I think the park is used for bigger church events that draws larger crowds. On a usual day, locals enjoy the park for their exercise and runs or to just spend a lazy afternoon watching the afternoon pass by.
 
Catarman River
 
The Catarman River played a pivotal role in building the present-day Catarman. The mouth of the river was host to the first settlement in the area. The river is fed by 5 tributary creeks - Paticua, Hibulwangan, Mahangna, Tura, and Danao. It is a major provincial river that separates the east and west sides of the town.

A river esplanade is now being developed along its river coast. I was able to get a full view the river’s mouth from a small “park” just beside the old Catarman bridge. POST TRAVEL NOTES
Catarman’s small town vibe is its main tourist draw. It may not have the breathtaking landscape that the province is known for but its rustic vibe makes it stand out. This is a town that  either lets you warm up before a Northern Samar exploration or slows you down after a rugged adventure or both. In my case, it slowed me down and it let me experience the slow rural vibe before letting me head back to my urban busy life.

Local destinations have different flavors and vibe that makes it unique. Filipinos often associate great destinations with white sand beach spots, amazing sunrise or sunsets, and heartstopping views but not all destinations are blessed with such. Other destinations take pride with breathtaking views and simple attractions that makes us appreciate the simple things in Filipino living. These simple things make the experience extraordinary.

We are getting ready to get more clicks of the Philippines this 2026!
As always, I am starting my 2026 with my top 5 local destinations for 2025. These local spots gave me my travel highs last year, either from exploring it on my own, giving me that rustic adventure vibe, drowning me in its natural beauty, or all three. These spots simply gave me the high 5 this 2025.
 
Mapanas and Palapag, Northern Samar
 
These two Northern Samar towns tops my 2025 list. Both towns have kept itself under the tourism radar despite having a scenic seascape and a rich history to share. The natural beauty of the towns strengthen the province’s tourism draw that is largely anchored on its dramatic rocky landscapes. To sum it up, both towns are simply amazing.

Its coast was a good break from the usual beach views.
Mapanas charms its way to the heart of the traveler with its beautiful and rugged seascape matched with its bucolic vibe. From a road curve to standing up close, these massive rock formations that dot its coast was simply majestic. These natural attractions, carved for hundreds of years by the Pacific, solidly grounds its branding in Philippine tourism. The dramatic views of its coast matched by its laidback old town vibe makes you slow down to just simply enjoy the moment.

Palapag played a huge role in the Galleon Trade.
The town of Palapag, on the other hand, will get you hooked by its rugged beauty interlaced with its history. This town was an important post during the Galleon Trade as it was the last “fueling stop” before the galleons start their trans-Pacific voyage. The town was also pivotal in the spread of an uprising against forced labor that was started by its local hero, Juan Sumuroy. At present, the town sits silently in the shadows of history and ready to share its story to travelers who take the time to stop by the town. #GOT71NorthernSamar

Luna, Apayao
 
Luna was an enchantress. The distance of this destination matched by the challenge of public transport has made its attractions a bit tricky to explore. I was lucky that a Baguio-based travel
organizer, Napapagna, organized a stress-free trip that had us exploring the sights and sounds of this amazing town. We had a full weekend clambering through rock formations, cruising inside cave rivers, and paddling through the still waters of its main cave attractions.

You will be amazed by Luna’s untouched beauty. We clambered up Dupag Rock Formation to get that picturesque overhead shot at its peak while getting immersed by the magnificent view of the surrounding valley. We explored the underground river of Manacota and got amazed by the untouched gorge where the river runs through before going underground. We took those amazing shots paddling through the cave mouth of Lussok Cave. The town of Luna gives you a well-deserved breather with nature. It lets you breathe in its charm and makes sure that you never forget. #GOT70Apayao

Anda, Bohol
 
Anda gives the best sunrise view while enjoying its powdery white sand. This is the best place to head off to if you want to enjoy island life without the usual tourist crowd. It fuses the island paradise vibe with the town’s rustic feel. You get to really immerse with its seascape vibe in a serene and peaceful vibe. It is a rustic paradise and an easy alternative for those who want a laidback white sand beach spot, away from the crowd.

Anda is popular for its cave pools that dot its coast.
But beyond its beautiful white sand coast, you also get your dose of adrenaline with its collection of cave pools. Cabagnow Cave Pool is its main draw. It is a huge cave with a deep pool at the bottom. You can get to jump into from its opening to enjoy a quick cold dip with that extra adrenaline rush. Anda starts you off with a chill morning, gives you a rush throughout the day, and relaxes you with a nice evening wrap. That’s how this Bohol town defines beach escape.

Jomalig Island, Quezon
 
This island destination has been on my list for years and I am glad that I finally ticked it off in 2025. Jomalig Island is a full-packed adventure from start to finish. From the 4-hour boat ride to motorcycling around the island, it gives you the thrill of exploring the island rough and hard. The whole trip is not for the faint of heart. It is tiring but exciting.

Exploring Jomalig Island is like opening gifts during Christmas Eve. You unwrap each beach spot one after another with a lot of excitement. Each beach spot exudes a different character and travelers can find their own beach spot depending on their vibe. From beach bumming on white sand beach spots to watching the sunset on golden sands to out of this world coast, Jomalig got you worth it. You get to enjoy the island better with great company… yung hindi mga buraot.

Boljoon, Cebu
 
Just like Jomalig, Boljoon has been on my list for quite sometime now. The timing of my visit was perfect as it was just a few weeks after the treasured Spanish-period pulpit panels were returned to the Boljoon Church. Boljoon stands out from this selection for its history and story. Its well-preserved fortress church complex and
the saga on its lost, but later on recovered, 19th century pulpit panels was enough to get me to visit and explore this town on the southern end of Cebu.

It was the beauty of its Spanish-period church that piqued my interest to visit the town of Boljoon. Little did I know that the story of its long-lost pulpit panels would get me more hooked to wanting to visit the town. The return of this panels to the church had me scrambling to visit it so I can see it for myself. The visit did not only give me the opportunity to see the panels in its rightful owners and place but it also allowed me to see the natural beauty of Boljoon face to face.

Moving forward to 2026, I have shortlisted 6 PH destinations that I am manifesting to visit this 2026. These spots are:
 
Kalinga - From my Luna, Apayao trip, I found out that Kalinga is more than just a tattoo destination. I would like to check out the adrenaline rush that this destination offers. #GOT82PH 
 
Limasawa, Southern Leyte - This PH destination fuses colorful history and the beauty in nature in one which makes it more appealing to me. #GOT82PH
 
Dinagat Island -  Another #GOT82PH goal, I think this island is going to be beach heaven for me this year.
 
Tondo, Manila - I am starting a new travel series that will focus on retrace the footsteps of Andres Bonifacio and the best place to start is his birthplace.
 
Sambaoan, Cebu - Time to uncover the beauty of nature and history on this Southern Cebu town.
 
Anini-y, Antique - This town was once the talk of the town of travelers. Time to check it out after the buzz has subsided.
 
These are just some of my travel goals this year and I am excited that I will get to share with you my new travel stories. It will be a mix of new local destinations and revisiting old spots. I hope that by sharing my travel stories, you get encouraged to travel around the Philippines more.

Rustic and rugged, this province gives a different vibe that gives you a travel experience. From the rocks from ages of Mapanas, I went on to explore the rocks and history of a town that also stood for ages. Tara’t alamin natin ang kwento sa minsang pagpalag ng munting bayan ng Palapag.

Exploring the rustic history of Palapag!
Palapag is a laidback municipality that lies along the coast of the Pacific. It once served as the center of Ibabao, one of the three Spanish-period residences in Samar. Interestingly, this small town played a huge role in the galleon trade between the Philippines and Mexico. So, it didn’t come as a surprise to find footprints of its colorful past around town.
 
Sleeping Lion Rock Formation
 
Just like the town of Mapanas, the coast of Palapag is dotted with rock formations formed by the wind and waters of the Pacific. The Sleeping Lion is an attraction quietly tucked in one of its rustic coastline communities. It is an unassuming destination. There are no directional signages that we had to rely on google map and asking locals where we can find it.

We are off to search for the Sleeping Lion of Palapag.
We started the search for this “sleeping” giant at a beach cove behind the community’s cemetery. The towering rock formations that bordered the cove was picturesque that it reminded me of the movie location of “The Beach”. We walked north of the cove, scrambling over rocks, under the heat of the late afternoon sun. I was already here and I did not want to miss out on this spot.

and there it was... a giant "lion" molded by the Pacific to slumber.
After 15 minutes of walking through a beaten trail, we came into another white sand cove and there it was. The rock formation molded by nature to look like a lion in slumber, with its head nestled on its front limbs. The indentations on the rock surface creates the image of its eyes and mouth while the vegetation create the visuals of it mane and fur. It really looked like a massive lion sleeping along the coastal waters of Mapanas.
 
Pangpang Falls
 
This attraction is an interesting stop along the national highway - Pangpang Falls. Tucked along the mountains of Palapag, the water cascades along the rock wall that faces the Pacific. This water then flows downstream towards the sea. The view of Pangpang Falls was amazing with its cascade and the forest covers surrounding it.

Taking in the view of Pangpang Falls did not require any hike but I guess you can also head on towards its base if you want to get a closer view. You might need a local guide though to do this. It was just amazing that you get to enjoy this rustic view along the roadside. I could imagine how grand the cascade would look during the rainy season.
 
Rakit Dakit Rock Formation
 
A gated cove was our access point to the Rakit Dakit Rock Formations. The beach cove offers a panoramic view of a white sand coastline of Palapag with a huge rock formation on one side. There were a few locals exploring the rocky coast when we arrived.

The huge rock formation towers over the cove like it was guarding it from the waves of the Pacific. The gray rock crevices and the green foliage stand out from the blue waters and skies. The view is dramatic as you catch the waters of the Pacific crashing on its base. At first glance, the rock may look to be the prime attraction but there’s more to this landscape.

I was amazed by the smooth rock coast of Rakit Dakit.
Getting closer to the rock formation, a different kind of coast will capture your attention. The view of the smooth rock floor shoreline is simply captivating. Smoothened by the ocean waters of the Pacific for hundreds of years, it was like stepping into a different world. The smooth stone coast, the view huge rock formations, and the sound of waves crashing and rolling along its coast completes the experience.
 
Galleon Port
 
Unknown to many, the town of Palapag was a crucial point in the Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade. This small port on the outskirts of the town was the last stop of galleons for supplies before their transPacific voyage to Acapulco. It also serves as a stop of ships coming from Mexico before proceeding to Cavite City for repairs. The town’s strategic position made it the gateway of the world to the Philippines during the period.

The port was once a crucial point in world trade.
Business slowed down in the area when the galleon trade halted in 1815. The port remains operational to this day but caters to locals traveling within the area. It continues to connect the islands and coast in Northern Samar with its public transport. It also serves as a fish port for local fishermen.
 
Lumang Simbahan ng Palapag
 
The Spanish-period influence in Palapag is also evident in the town center. Standing adjacent to the new church are the ruins of the Old Palapag Church. It was established in 1605 and the stone church was completed in 1663. The church was shaped similar to a crucifix and was made from coral stones. It also served as a fortress against Moro pirate attacks.

You could see how massive the stone church was from the foundations that still remain standing until today. The moss and plant-covers on the walls are testament on the structure’s age. I wonder why the locals decided to build a new church. A small grotto also stands in one of the corners of the stone church.

The ruins were a mute witness to the old stories of the town.
The church was replaced by a new structure in 1970. Its role in Philippine history was recognized with the installation of two NHI markers - one for the church and the other honoring the role of Father Alcina in the Catholic faith community in Palapag. A white cross was also planted in front of the church to commemorate the 400 years of Christianity in Samar.
 
Palapag Town Plaza and Sumuroy Monument
 
At the heart of Palapag is the sprawling open park of Palapag Town Plaza. The plaza is complete with manicured lawns and a covered basketball court that also serves as the civic activity center of the town. The town plaza is a favorite afternoon spot of locals to chill out.

At one corner of the park is the Sumuroy Monument. The monument honors the local hero of Palapag, Agustin Sumuroy, who led a protest in 1649-1650 against the Spaniards for abuses and forced labor of residents. This protest spread through Albay, Sorsogon, Cebu, Masbate, Bohol, Iligan, and Zamboanga. This revolt is recognized as the first widespread revolution of Filipinos against the Spaniards.

POST TRAVEL NOTES
Palapag is another unassuming destination in Northern Samar. Behind its lowkey vibe is a story of bravery that, more often than not, will surprise you. It was interesting to find out how this little carved its story in world and local history. Nasa sa lupa ng Palapag ay may pumalag na mga Pilipino laban sa mga Kastila.

Small Philippine towns indeed carry big stories. Exploring the Philippines helps you uncover these stories which reconnects you to our history and culture. I just hope that Filipinos can put more value in understanding our past so we can move forward from the learnings.

Getting there: Philippine Airlines flies to Catarman on specific days of the week from Manila and Cebu. You can take a trike from the airport to Colorhub Paint Supply along Bonifacio Street. The van terminal for Palapag and Mapanas is just across this hardware. Trips to Palapag and Mapanas from Catarman are usually in the morning while van trips from Palapag to Catarman are only until 1pm.
